2nd general meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Dimapur was held on Thursday at deputy commissioner’s conference hall, Dimapur.
Addressing aims and objectives of SPCA, executive secretary SPCAs, Dimapur, Marian Rao stressed that the society needed a shelter for animals so that they could stand up on their feet after initial help from the government in some ways or the other. “Once we build the shelter, we could start adopting animals, build a hospital for them with modern amenities where we could have animal service, day and night care, doctors and hopefully have a helpline as well”, Marian said.
She further added that in order to prevent cruelty and help people get to know SPCA better, the society would be looking into promoting awareness among the people through posters, seminars, exhibitions and health camps in schools and public places from time to time. She was hopeful that people would have a “deep sense of respect for life” once these drive were set up. She also added that the helpline would provide information and cater help to people who love pets but have meagre finance to take care of them. Marian also brought up the importance of ensuring animals are not forgotten disaster management whereby animals could be rescued and camps could be set up.
Speaking on “land/site for office and animal shelter”, deputy commissioner Dimapur, president SPCAs, Kesonyu Yhome said that the experiences in some states were better than Nagaland and that an animal shelter was the need of the hour. While ensuring that the department would revisit the matter, he also urged the members to keep making valuable contributions for the welfare of animals.
Earlier in the meeting, Kesonyu Yhome greeted individuals present and closed with a vote of thanks. The meeting was attended by representatives from lions club, Dimapur Muslim council and individuals. It may be noted that members from the house formed a five member committee to work out charts and conduct awareness in various locations.
