
Hundreds of people, both old and young, turned out at the Deepawali Mela 2017 organized by Lions Club and Leo Club of Dimapur at Lions Centre, Midland Dimapur on Sunday.
The mela, a mixture of various entertainment extravaganzas was graced by parliamentary secretary, irrigation and flood control, Tovihoto Ayemi as chief guest.
Impressed by the huge turnout, Tovihoto said that the gathering from all walks of life, irrespective of caste, colour and creed have reflected the true symbol of strength and unity. “Let there be no discrimination on any basis in the society and let equality prevail”, he added.
He also urged the gathering to revive the values of unity where everyone should strive to bring up the children, so that families and societies would be strengthened to build a better world.
“This is a time when we think of the triumph of light over darkness and it is marked by beautifully illuminated homes and surroundings”, he said. However, he reminded the gathering that apart from decorating homes, it was everyone’s responsibility to give importance to the community, so that the real meaning of celebration could be achieved.
Tovihoto also urged the gathering to develop the values of harmonious co-existence with smiles, joy and laughter. “If you have come here with these values, then certainly you are making a huge contribution to the society and it is a contribution that we should also be celebrating this afternoon”, he added.
On the occasion, Tovihoto also lauded the Lions Club for the “remarkable contributions” towards the poor and downtrodden. He therefore, urged the club members to celebrate its success story besides Diwali. Tovihoto was also made member of Lions Club.
The celebration was also attended by advisor urban development, S.I. Jamir. Earlier, Tovihoto and his wife, and S.I. Jamir handed over the awards to the winners of the peace poster painting competition.
