Judge, Gauhati High Court and executive chairman NSLSA Justice L.S Jamir asked the penal lawyers to dispose legal aid cases at the earliest within a period of one to three months.
He reminded that legal aid services were for the people from weaker section thereby they should not be made to suffer. Jamir said this at the inaugural function of the three-day refresher training of the penal lawyers organized by Nagaland State Legal Service Authority (NSLSA) which began Wednesday at the directorate of the State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD).
He informed that legal service authority was constituted to provide free and competent legal service to the weaker sections of the society. He said that weaker section looked upon the lawyers with expectation to redress their grievances.
Asserting that every day was a learning process, Jamir said that lawyers were expected to be sincere in their work, know the basic and concepts of various laws in the country. Jamir pointed out that there were number of departments with various schemes. In this regard, he told them that implementation was most important and asked to impart the various schemes and policies for effective implementation.
He also informed that lawyers focus must be to render service to the ordinary citizens and asked the lawyers to file their reports quarterly to NSLSA. He also encouraged them to guide the PLVs as PLVs go to the grass-root level, whereby service would reach to the grass-root people.
Member secretary NSLSA Nino Iralu in her keynote address expressed that the refresher training would help the penal lawyers to work more effectively as mentors. She said out of the 108 penal lawyers in Nagaland, 40 have completed three years and currently 28 lawyers from across the state were taking part in the training. Iralu appealed the lawyers to realize that they were the pillars of legal service authority, PLVs and district magistrates.
He appealed them to come and learn from resource person to render quality services. The programme was chaired by NSLSA coordinator, Akumla Longchari.
