Nagaland chief secretary, Pankaj Kumar, who is also the president of Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) society, has lauded ten years of the exceptional service rendered the institution in the medcial sector.
Speaking as the chief guest at CIHSR 10th anniversary celebration at its premises on Saturday, Kumar said CIHSR has achieved so much in ten years.
He also added that in the last few years, CIHSR’s collaboration with Tata Trust has been growing.
He cited college of nursing, post-graduate courses, paramedical courses, Community Lay-Leaders’ Health Training Certificate (CLHTC), special program for children in need, etc. as some of the achievements of CIHSR so far.
The CS said the institution had earned a reputation for its great performances and that this could be measured by the number of patients, not only from Nagaland but from surrounding states, that come to CIHSR to avail its services.
“When patients from outside start visiting the hospital, we can be assured that we are providing quality and affordable care to these patients and this is what’s especially encouraging in the efforts of CIHSR”, he said.
Kumar said one of the primary objectives of CIHSR was to become a centre of excellence and thus, it had always embodied values like honesty, transparency and integrity coupled with compassion for both patients and those who serve them.
“CIHSR has been a vibrant and supportive fellowship, focusing on the poor and marginalised and inter-denominational and multi-racial inclusiveness”, he said.
Kumar added that it was because of these values and cherished goals that CIHSR has become the forefront of institutions which are improving public services in the state.
The CS informed that CIHSR has acquired help from the Northeast Council to develop infrastructure and had also signed MoU with Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) for developing a regional institution.
He said CIHSR would continue its relation with Tata Trust for radiotherapy and cancer care centre and approach Nagaland University for certification of its degree courses.
Kumar also informed that accreditation process for laboratories was underway as it was considered an important step to take the institution forward.
Presenting the director’s report, CIHSR director, Dr. Sedevi Angami said, the hospital was initially made possible by a small team put together by Dr. Varghese Phillip, Tony Sykes, Dr. P.K John, Varadarajan and others.
He said the work began in the year 2005 immediately after MoU was signed with the government of Nagaland, Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) New Delhi and Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore.
Recalling the initial years, Dr. Sedevi said the project did not seem viable as the odds were insurmountable adding that during that period people from outside the region had a negative notion about Northeast.
“People think it is the whole organisation behind this project but it is the collective effort of a few people who were passionately driven about making this possible”, he said.
Also citing financial crisis during initial period, Dr. Sedevi said, “the funds that was supposed to come from the government generally got held back for ages so that they could earn interest from parking it in the treasury, a civil deposit or either get diverted for political reasons”, he said.
“Today the hospital has stabilised to be a good secondary multi-speciality centre with several committed staff with a sense of purpose and direction”, he said.
Dr. Sedevi said at present CIHSR provides high-quality care to many patients in the state with about 50% of patients from Assam. He said various clinical departments were now maturing to be well-knitted and purposeful and that a lot of people have begun taking ownership.
Further, Dr. Sedevi said CIHSR had always aimed at not only providing healing to the patients but a sense of Godly compassion as well.
The programme was chaired by Purnungla Aier and Ningrinchon Rumthao, welcome address by Dr. Temsula Alinger, institutional song and Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research choral by CIHSR choir with Emmi Odyuo as pianist, thanksgiving prayer by Rev. P Dozo, acknowledging of alumni and staff completing 10 and 5 years service and short speeches by Dr. P.K John and Dr. Abraham Joseph, while vote of thanks was delivered by chairman of 10th anniversary celebration, Dr. Viu Meru.
