New Chumukedima Village Council (NCVC) has sealed off plying of heavy vehicles in KJB sub-highway bridge over Chathe river at New Chumukedima Village due to its perilous state.
A press release from NCVC chairman, S. Bao Hama said appeals that the council had made to the Executive Engineer PWD (R&B) Dimapur Division on July 18 and another to the Chief Engineer PWD (R&B) Kohima on August 21, to inspect and renovate the bridge has failed to yield any positive responses and the department is yet to send officials to inspect the deteriorating bridge which serves as the lifeline of many villages.
The council said that as per its resolution, agreed on November 30, it has decided to ban plying of heavy vehicles over the frail 34 year old bridge, due to concerns of public safety. The council also clarified that any eventualities in the event of the bridge’s collapse will solely be the responsibility of the department.
