
A one day seminar on “Bamboo for sustainable livelihood and climate change mitigation” was organized by the Chizami Village Welfare Forum and Village Development Board in collaboration with the Department of Forests, Environment & Wildlife, Government of Nagaland on May 12 at the Village Council Hall.
A press release from Chizami Village Council secretary, Keduwe Tsuhah said that Dharmendra Prakash, Addl. PCCF and Velatso Demo, DFO, Phek were the resource persons of the seminar wherein 74 village leaders from different departments participated.
In the inaugural session, the Addl. PCCF highlighted the importance of bamboo as a source of livelihood both locally and globally which could generate employment income for the rural people in particular.
He also dwelt on value addition—adding to the cost of the raw bamboo by making them into useful things. He stated that bamboo which was earlier considered a poor man’s wood was now considered ‘Green Gold’ for its potentialities. He explained that bamboo was the fastest growing plant in the world and was one of the best plants to combat climate change mitigation.
In the second session, the DFO, Phek spoke on the topic ‘Bamboo plantation and management’ in which he presented a vegetative propagation of bamboo with the details about the collection of materials, cutting, planting and transplanting. He also stressed on the importance of wildlife conservation.
The programme was chaired by Seno Tsuhah, coordinator NEN, Welhite Naro VCC gave the welcome and set the context of the programme, Khenemv L. Mero, a village elder, spoke on the use of bamboo in the traditional economy, Bojuwe T. Mero was the moderator, Weyelo Mero delivered the concluding remark and the final blessing was pronounced by senior pastor K. Thopi. Some 1495 MGNREGA job card holders conducted bamboo plantation along a roadside stretch of 17 kms from Chizami towards Phek.
