Iodine awareness program held in Zunheboto

As part of the week-long observation of Global IDD prevention, a sensitization & awareness meeting was held with salt traders under the theme, “Iodised salt: Trader’s responsibilities” at the CMO’s office in Zunheboto on October 25.

A press release by district media officer, CMO office, Zunheboto, Shekho Sophie stated that the district CMO, Dr. C W Tungoe, who spoke on the occasion, sensitised traders on the daily requirement of iodine which is 15 microgram per day and the sources of iodine such as sea fish, sea salt, cod liver oil and readily available iodised salt etc.

Dr. Tungoe further laid stress on the various implications associated with deficiency of iodine such as goitre, mental retardation, speech defects, hearing defects, neuromuscular weakness, spontaneous abortion etc. The traders were made to understand that they were the vital link between iodised salt producers and consumers. 

Dr. Tungoe also advised shopkeepers to stock and sell only iodised salt adding that sale of non iodised salt is banned under the provision of PFA Act 1954. He also said that it was also the responsibility of every citizen to purchase and consume only iodised salt.

Drug Inspector, Lutovi Phucho also demonstrated the use of qualitative iodised salt testing using a test kit and participants were made to sign a pledge to stock and sell only iodised salt. 

The program was chaired by food safety officer, Sukumlo Yanthan who also delivered the welcome address.

Essay competition on iodine deficiency disorders 
District Health Society, Zunheboto organised an essay competition on “Observance of Global IDD Prevention Day” at GHSS, Zunheboto on October 26. The first prize was won by Libo, while Kiboka and Avika (all class nine students) won the second and third prizes respectively.
A press release by district media officer, CMO office, Zunheboto, Shekho Sophie stated that chief medical officer of Zunheboto, Dr. C W Tungoe, who was the resource person, highlighted the importance of iodised salt and shared some facts about iodine deficiency disorders saying that they occur in almost all states and union territories of the country. 
Dr. Tungoe also said that iodine was essential for normal growth, development and functioning of both the brain and body. A pregnant woman with iodine deficiency is likely to birth an abnormal child, he said.
DCM, Viketol also demonstrated how to test iodine content in salt.
The program was chaired by Dr. Imsongienla and principal, GHSS, Zunheboto, Emilo Patton delivered the welcome address.
