A State Level Consultation on Reproductive Rights and Law was held on November 28 and 29 at the conference hall of Jubilee Memorial Centre, Lerie Kohima, organized and sponsored by Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) & European Union.
A press release from Nagaland Voluntary Consumers Organization (NVCO) press & media cell, stated that the consultation urged the state government to set up the State Food Commission (SFC) failing which public interest litigation may be initiated.
According to the release, assistant professor Kohima Law College and president of NVCO, Kezhokhoto Savi was the resource person on the topic, “Right Food – issues & challenges”. During his presentation, Savi said that National Food Security Act 2013 is an Act that aims to provide subsidized food grains to approximately two thirds of India’s population.
Savi highlighted the history of the Public Distribution System (PDS) in India.
Savi explained that the Act categorizes the population into Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Household (PHH) where the poorest of the poor (AAY) are given priority.
Savi also pointed out that after a delay of nearly three years, Nagaland government finally launched the much awaited Act on June 27, 2016 for Dimapur and Kohima.
Lack of awareness among the general public about the act is a genuine concern stated Kezhokhoto Savi, and he appealed to the participants to create more awareness to educate the citizens of their entitlements.
The participants included different districts’ civil societies, students’ unions, women, various projects and more than 30 LL.B final year students of Kohima Law College.
