
National Voters Day (NVD) is celebrated every year on January 25 to spread awareness about the necessity of voting and to encourage the young generation to exercise their franchise. This year was the ninth year that National Voters Day was celebrated, the first being in 2011. January 25 is the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (ECI) which came into existence in 1950.
The day was celebrated in Nagaland, under the theme “No voter left behind” marked by presentation of awards to best Booth Level Officers, felicitation of new voters and administration of Voters Pledge. The following are reports from across the state sent by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), except where otherwise mentioned.
Mon: “It is the responsibility of each and every eligible voter to cast their vote to elect the candidate and no voter should be left behind” stated Thavaseelan K, DC & District Election Officer, Mon, during the 9th National Voters’ Day celebration on January 25, at Council Hall, Mon.
National Voters’ Day is very important and significant because young voters newly enrolled in the e-roll will become a part of the electoral process, the DC added. Thavaseelan also encouraged young voters to cast their votes responsibly during elections. He also gave the helpline number for election related enquiries of Mon district (03869-1950).
The DC also presented certificates and awards to winners of the College Debate, School Essay Competition, Marathon Run and AC wise best BLO on the occasion. He also led the voter’s pledge during the program. Dharam Raj, assistant commissioner, Mon who also spoke on the occasion advised young voters to be agents of change, vote ethically, and to choose their leaders wisely because “every vote counts”.
Easter Konyak, District Icon & Miss Mon 2018 and Nangpa Konyak, District Icon PwDs, Mon also deliverd short speeches during the function.
Earlier, the program was chaired by Chumlamo Humtsoe, SDO (C) Sadar Mon, Tuishimla Konyak, district chaplain, Mon invoked God’s blessing and Changthungo, HA Election Branch, Mon delivered the vote of thanks. (Correspondent)
Kiphire: NVD was celebrated at the DC’s Conference Hall in Kiphire with Deputy Commissioner & District Election Officer Kiphire, M. Shayung Phom as the chief guest.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Kiphire, Reny Wilfred spoke about the importance of celebrating NVD and also about ethical voting. Campus Ambassador Zisaji Presidency College Kiphire, Thrisela Sangtam shared her experience on the Strengthening Women’s Empowerment through Electoral Processes (SWEEP) Campaign, and District Icon, Kepenshi spoke on “One man, one vote.” The program was chaired by Assistant Election Officer Kiphire, Olivi Thurr. To mark the day, Essay and Painting Competitions were also organized and conducted after the formal program.
The recognition of Best Booth Level Officers (BLOs) went to Sethrili Sangtam BLO from 59 AC and N. Yamuli, BLO from 60 AC.
The National Voters’ Day pledge was led by the chief guest. The Chief Election Commissioner, Sunil Arora’s video message was also played during the program. The program ended with a vote of thanks by EAC Kiphire, Chinithung Ovung. (Correspondent)
Dimapur: Dimapur district celebrated National Voters Day at the conference hall of the Commissioner of Taxes Office with Commissioner of Taxes, Kesonyu Yhome, as special guest.
Speaking on the occasion he mentioned the achievements of neighbouring states, and said Nagaland has few success stories which shows a poor the picture of the state.
He urged everyone to stop electoral malpractice and to start doing their own part in cleaning up the e-roll. Earlier a massage by the Chief Election Commissioner was also played.
Pfutsero: Pfutsero sub division observed the day at the ADC’s conference hall. ADC Pfutsero, Zeneikhonuo Vimero and pastor, Mission Baptist Church Pfutsero graced the program as the main speakers. ADC Pfutsero in her short speech highlighted the benefits of getting enrolled in the electoral rolls. She said that once enrolled, it enables a person to take decisions of their own.
Dr. Kuzhopoyo speaking on clean election said that though Nagaland was a declared Christian state, it is one of the most corrupted states in the country. He said that the root cause of corruption in the state is because of manipulation of e-rolls and the public is responsible for most of the corruption. He lamented that the current election system in Nagaland is in poor state and called for change in the system in order to bring improvement to society.
Tening: The 9th National Voters Day 2019 was celebrated at Tening town under Peren district on January 25 under the theme, “No voter left behind.”
A press release from ADC Tening, Chubatemjen stated that the meeting deliberated on problems faced by the public and BLOs in the enumeration period. The meeting also discussed lack of timely information from the concerned departments. Chubatemjen highlighted the aims, objective, needs, benefits, remedies and significance of and for voters. The program focused on voter inclusiveness and on voting as a responsibility.
Further, the BLOs also appealed for more decentralized training at the sub-division level, instead of the district headquarters. The meeting was attended by BLOs, political party leaders, NGOs and students.
Peren: The event was celebrated at Town Council Hall, Peren Town with SDO (Civil) Peren, Rahul, as the special guest.
Addressing the function he said that NVD is held every year on the foundation day of Election Commission of India from 2011. He also encouraged elegible students to participate in the elections and enhance the quality of India’s democracy.
Earlier, assistant election officer Peren, Nathan Konyak delivered a key note address.
Zunheboto: Zunheboto District celebrated NVD at the DC Office’s Conference Hall.
Delivering a welcome address DC & DEO Zunheboto, Shanavas C explained the various code & conducts of election and encouraged officials to be sincere in carrying out their duties. He also called upon the officials to ensure that all eligible persons (i.e. above the age of 18 years) are able to vote. He further spoke about the NOTA button in the EVM which stands for None of the Above (NOTA). If a voter does not want to vote for any candidate then he/she can press the NOTA button. District Icon, Aghali H Assumi also spoke on the theme of the day.
Phek: NVD was celebrated at Phek DPDB conference hall. Khriesangoyi Dozo requested officials to help disabled persons so that everybody can exercise the right to vote. He also called upon the people to not sell their votes.
DC, Orenthung Lotha said that every citizen of age should participate in elections and abstain from selling their votes. He also called upon voters to vote for the right candidates who can lead the people in the right direction.
Mokokchung: The day was marked with a program at Community Hall, Penli Ward Mokokchung with special guest and theme speaker T. Imlitoshi Walling in the presence of DC & DEO Mokokchung, Rajesh Soundarajan.
Walling called on youth encouraging them to get enrolled in the electoral roll and get involved in the democratic process of nation building. Soundarajan also delivered a short speech where he also encouraged young voters to take the opportunity and exercise their voting right.
Tuensang: Along with the rest of the nation District Election Office Tuensang, also organized an NVD program at CKS Hall Tuensang. Nungsanglemba Chang, president Chang Khulei Setshang was the chief guest of the program.
DC Tuensang, L. Jamithung Lotha in his welcome speech introduced the toll free number 1950 for election related quires.
Nungsang Lemba Chang, in his speech encouraged the exercise of the citizens’ franchise. He said that the scenario of the Naga election processes in depriving genuine voters should be checked. Speaking on the theme he said, it should be the responsibility and duty of citizens to get enrolled.
Wokha: An NVD program was held in Wokha at Town Hall.
ADC & Electoral Registration Officer Wokha, K. Mhanthung Tsanglao, National Voters’ Day was instituted to increase the numbers of voters all around the country. He said that India is a democratic country, every citizen has the basic right to vote, he or she has the right to vote and select a leader who is capable to lead the nation, solve the problems of the common people, bring about changes etc.
Civil Secretariat: NVD was observed at Nagaland Civil Secretariat with a pledge taking program. The program was chaired by the Home Commissioner, Ramakrishnan, who administered the pledge to the officers and staff. Earlier secretary, Home Department Rovilatuo Mor, stated that NVD is observed every year with a purpose to spread awareness on the importance of voting by every citizen.
Noklak: NVD was observed at Noklak Hq at KTC Hall. ADC Noklak, NeilezoTep spoke on getting enrolled in the electoral roll, right to vote, enrolment of PWDs voters etc. He further encouraged the gathering, especially the BLOs, to be vigilant when carrying out their responsibilities. SDO (Civil) Phunniang chaired the session and administered the voter’s pledge.
Medziphema: Medziphema sub-division observed NVD at DB court ADC office, Medziphema. Sentilong Ozukum, EAC chairing the short program, welcomed newly registered voters and encouraged the young people to exercise their franchise — the right to vote in a democratic nation. ADC Thsuvisie Phoji in his note to the voters also explained the significance of National Voters’ Day. The ADC also urged all the eligible voters and encouraged more young voters to take part in the political process.
Bhandari: The day was observed at the Conference Hall of the Additional Deputy Commissioner Bhandari.
EAC Baghty, Selemla S. Sangtam was the chairperson. Addressing the gathering ADC& AERO Bhandari, Tiameren Chang congratulated the best performing BLOs under 40 A/C Bhandari. New voters who recently enrolled in the electoral roll were given EPIC cards by the ADC and AERO 40, A/C Bhandari, after leading the Oath taking pledge.
The ADC, in his speech, also stated that a person’s vote is his most powerful identity and he has rights to take part in nation’s progress through electoral participation. Short speeches were also delivered by SDO (PHED) Hukato Shohe and president Lotha Lower Range Students Union.
Aboi: NVD was celebrated at ADC’s Conference Hall Aboi. Pledge taking was administered by ADC Aboi, Hito Sema; a vote of thanks was delivered by W. Shoyan Konyak, SDO, Soil and supervisor of 47th AC Aboi.
