Against the backdrop of boycott call against 70th Republic Day celebrations by NSF and backed by several organisations in protest against Citizenship Amendment Bill,a moderate crowd attended the programme at DDSC stadium in Dimapur.
Speaking on the occasion Minister of Urban Development, Municipal Affairs, Metsubo Jamir said that since the creation of Nagaland as a state of Indian Union in 1963, the state government has continued as a partner in development and progress of the nation.
In order to protect and safeguard the historic and unique cultural traditions and customary practices of the Nagas, Jamir said special constitutional provisions under Articles 371 (A) were incorporated in the Constitution of India.
He said the special provisions not only safeguarded the rights of the people of Nagaland but also gave them an opportunity to grow and develop according to their own genius.
The minister also highlighted the achievements of the ruling PDA government during the last one year in various fields in the law and order, education, investments, road etc.
On the occasion, the minister also made a special appeal to the educated youth to strengthen village economy and contribute to make Nagaland economically self-sufficient and prosperous.
Earlier, the minister inspected the parade contingents, unfurled the tricolour and took the salute presented by contingents of 173 Bn CRPF, 1st NAP Bn, Police Commissionerate Dimapur, 15th NAP (IR) Mahila Bn, Nagaland Home Guards, Excise Directorate Dimapur, Ex-Servicemen and 5th Assam Rifles Band Platoon.
The Republic Day celebration was also attended by former Governor Dr. S.C. Jamir. An exhibition and sale stalls were set up by different government departments.
Out of three cultural clubs mentioned in the programme only Dimasa Cultural Club turned up. The celebration was followed by a football exhibition match between Dobashis Dimapur district and GBs union Dimapur.
