Kohima city generates about 70-80 metric tons of waste a day and 80 % of the waste was found to be dry & 20% wet, as per SIPMIU data.
This was disclosed by Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) official during a sensitization programme on plastic pollution and its harmful effects and role of women in waste management sponsored by KMC held at Angamimiapfii Mechii Krotho (AMK) conference hall here on Tuesday.
Speaking on the present scenario and system in waste management, KMC office secretary Zakie Kiso briefed the history of KMC and highlighted the present scenario of waste and some activities of KMC.
Also, highlighting some major projects/schemes under KMC, Kiso stressed the importance of segregating dry and wet waste.
Speaking on plastic pollution and its harmful effects, Thangi Mannen, IAS (Retd) and founding member Green team Kohima, said that single-use plastics were the biggest pollutants, adding that globally 5 trillion plastic bags were used per year i.e. 160,000 a second and over 700 a year for every single person on the planet.
Mannen stated that more than 95% of the non-biodegradable wastes collected were plastic trash. She said plastic pollution was toxic to human health, adding that even babies were born pre-polluted by the food and drinks that the mother consume.
She further said that groundwater and air pollution caused by plastic was affecting health causing cancers and respiratory problems.
Therefore, she called upon the participants of the seminar, not to wait for the government directives but take the initiative by avoiding plastic and practicing segregation of waste.
Green team Kohima, Alice Kamei shared the role of women in waste management stating that women play a vital role in waste management at home as management begins from home.
