International Workers’ Day (Workers’ Day, Labour Day, May Day) is a celebration of labourers and the working classes promoted by the international labour movement, marked every year on May Day (May1). The day was observed by various organizations in Nagaland with programs organized to commemorate the event.
NEISSR: The North East Institute of Social Science and Research (NEISSR) commemorated International Labour Day (ILD) on May 1 at NEISSR Conference Hall.
A press release from principal, NEISSR, Dr. Fr. CP Anto stated that NEISSR assistant professor, Dr. Amit Das, shared about the origins and importance of the ILD, where he stated that it was an important global celebration.
He stated that workers receive minimum wages by selling their own labour and that is why Labour Day is celebrated internationally for promotion of International Labour Union.
Dr. Fr. CP Anto also shared about the dignity of labour, where he said that the success of work is not confined to only the limits of hard work alone, but is accompanied by truth, justice and commitment. He encouraged the students to work smart with values and acknowledged their effort and labour to complete their research work on time.
The release also stated that Renchano Lotha, a student of fourth semester, moderated the program and the NEISSR music club presented a special song followed by a sharing on “belief” by fourth semester student, Toli.
NDWM, ACID: The National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM) Nagaland region in collaboration with Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID), commemorated International Workers Day on May 1 by recognizing workers, especially domestic workers, in Signail Angami and Thaheku village.
A press release from NDWM Nagaland region stated that the day was commemorated by organizing different programs on gender based violence, workers right and women’s rights, in different colonies. State coordinator of NDWM Nagaland region, Sr. Pramila Lobo said that the day was observed to honour workers who contribute much to the growth of the country’s economy.
“Ending violence and harassment in the world of work” was one of the statements discussed in the planning meeting of the IDWF Asia Petition of Asian Governments.
The movement called upon the government of India to support an ILO’s international convention, “Ending violence and harassment in the world of work”, supplemented by a recommendation at the upcoming ILO conference in June — ratify ILO Convention 189, decent work for domestic workers; recognise domestic workers as workers in all laws and policies; bring domestic workers under the schedule of employment, thus entitle minimum wages in Nagaland; uphold and realise all human rights principles and conventions, and the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDG) principle #5 on gender equality, and #8 on decent work; establish laws and policies to protect victims of domestic violence; and ensure enforcement and monitoring of related laws and policies.
