One-day training on “coffee planting and after care” for the farmers of five villages under Yongnyah block organized by Land Resource department and ATMA Longleng was held at Yongam village Saturday, with P. P. Choudhary, deputy director, Coffee Board of India (CBI) as the resource person.
While lauding the farmers of the district for taking up the project successfully within a short span of time, he said, Nagaland could produce one of the finest coffee in the country with best soil and suitable climate being detected by CBI.
He said in order to maintain the coffee cultivation in good condition and to increase the production, it was very important to follow and adopt improved technologies like use of improved high yielding plant varieties, soil conservation and fertility maintenance, plant training, shade management and integrated pest and disease management practices.
He also said that there are two different species of coffee which is planted by the farmers of the state such as Arabica and Robusta. He also highlighted that coffee was a shade loving plant and therefore he stated that “No shed no coffee” and advised farmers to grow shade trees in the field.
He also said that shade trees essentially help in preventing large variations in soil temperature and moisture levels, reduce intensity of sun light and temperature, combat drought effects and maintain moisture levels in coffee plant tissues and also protects the plants from low temperature.
He said that coffee grown under tree shade was found to be of superior quality and taste, whereby he encouraged farmers to follow the recommended as a protective measure.
During the training more than 100 farmers and well wishers attended where field demonstration was also done. Earlier, the training session was conducted by Kughalu Chishi DPO Longleng and invocation prayer by Nganlang Phom.
