Field day on Maize VHM 45 at Jalukiekam

Field day-cum-farmers scientist interaction programme was conducted by KVK Peren on July 30 at Jalukiekam village, which was sponsored by ICAR-VPKAS Almora, Uttarakhand. 

Special guest of the programme, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Khulbe, Senior Scientist, ICAR-VPKAS Almora gave a power point presentation on the practices and activities of the farmers in Uttarakhand region and how it could be applied in Nagaland particularly in Peren district. He also taught the farmers how maize could be used for various purposed like vegetable- baby corn, cornflakes, soups, baby food, flour etc besides livestock feed.
Feedback from the farmers about the maize variety, their experiences on adoption of the VHM45 variety and the package of practices were shared by farmers from both Jalukiekam and Beisumpuikam village. Management of soil health and nutrient management in their fields was shared by James Kikon and how to increase the yield upto the optimum level of 55qt/ha were discussed by the scientists during farmer scientist interaction.
A competition for best maize cob of VHM45 was also conducted, where Atheng from Jalukiekam emerged as the winner. Judges for the programme were Akham  Zeliang, Imti Walling from ATMA, Peren and Dr. RK Khulbe from VPKAS Almora. Other outstanding farmers were also felicitated. 
The programme ended with a visit to the farmers’ field where farmers were shown the benefits of following the scientific methods of farming for obtaining higher yield and income. 65 farmers attended the programme.
Earlier, welcome address was delivered by Dr. Babita Devi followed by speech on theme of the field day by Dr. Patu K. Zeliang.
