
Nagaland joined the rest of the country in celebrating the 65th Children’s Day by raising awareness on the rights, care, education and overall wellbeing of children on November 12. The day also marks the birth anniversary of the India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Child Rights Ambassadors: On the occasion of Children’s Day, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kohima, Gregory Thejawelie kicked off “Child Rights Ambassador” programme initiated by the Child Protection Services (CPS) Nagaland, department of Social Welfare at Hotel Japfu, Kohima.
He appreciated the initiative of the department and emphasized on the importance of children and their rights. He also elaborated on various legal provisions, policies, government schemes and programmes for the education, health, nutrition and welfare of the children.
Stating that the children are the future of the country, the DC said they should be protected from all harms and danger. As most of the children were enrolled in schools, Thejawelie said school becomes an important stakeholder for children.
Society director, CPS Nagaland, Chubainla Jamir, highlighted that every year Child Protection Services Nagaland celebrates Child Rights Week from November 14-20 by organising weeklong programme to promote children’s rights in the state.
This year, Jamir said CPS Nagaland has initiated “child rights ambassador programme” for schools which would be launched in all the districts.
She said the programme aimed to promote children’s rights in schools and emphasized that it would provide a platform upon which the children will be given an opportunity to be ambassadors for their rights, to empower themselves to speak out on the issues that effects them.
Jamir said children from schools would be trained and empowered so that they can in turn educate their peers on the rights of the children especially in their schools.
“CPS Nagaland believes that abuse and violence against children can be brought to an end and even prevented if right intervention is made at the right time,” said Jamir.
CPS Nagaland has informed that child rights ambassador programme was open to all the schools and students. It said the department would approach the schools, once the school agreed to be a part of this programme and they may assign students as child rights ambassadors.
CPS Nagaland said the children/students who have volunteered as a child rights ambassadors will have three main roles to play – they will tell others about children’s rights; tell others about Child protection mechanism available in our state; and be the voice for their fellow students.
UWWO: United Women Welfare Organization (UWWO) also celebrated the day at Children’s Park, Supply Colony, Dimapur. Addressing the gathering, former chief secretary, Banuo Z Jamir, urged parents and teachers present at the gathering to bring up children to be productive, progressive and responsible citizens by providing them the right kind of environment. She also spoke in brief about how first prime minister, late Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru emphasized education as the most important role for development of children. Earlier, the programme was chaired by Martha and invocation offered by Satemla. Special numbers were performed by the children’s of UWWO and teachers report delivered by Putula.
CECS Dimapur: Community Education Centre School (CECS), Dimapur, a project of Community Educational Centre Society (CECS) supported by The Hans Foundation celebrated the day at Grace Colony, Kuda-C, Nagarjan with DC Dimapur, Anoop Khinchi as special guest.
A press release by CECS Dimapur stated that, DC Dimapur in his speech emphasized on the importance of quality education and praised the work done by CECS for providing education to students from under privileged background.
Director CECS, Subonenba Longkumer in his welcome address expressed gratitude to all the parents and requested them to positively participate and support their children and the school in such programmes even in the coming days.
DC also handed over clothing materials to the teachers of CEC school on behalf of all the students received from “Sone Ki Chidiya Foundation” Mumbai.
GPS ‘B’ Shamator: Government primary school (GPS) ‘B’ Shamator observed the day-cum-annual picnic at school compound, chaired by Tsuyihba A/T.
BES Dimapur: Balijan English School Dimapur observed children’s day with various activities. Certificates and medals were also awarded to winners of competitions.
CSL Dimapur: Cambridge School Lingrijan (CSL), Dimapur organised a programme at indoor hall. Various kinds of dances and songs were presented by the teachers.
RJHSS Dimapur: At Ram Janaki Higher Secondary School (RJHSS) Dimapur, on Children’s Day, the principal gave a speech on Nehru’s philosophy, faith and impact on children.
MHS Darogajan: Mount Hermon School (MHS) Darogajan Dimapur also observed the day by organising cultural dance, fashion show, songs, bands, beat boxing etc. Certificates were given to the winners of painting and letter writing competition.
SSHSS Dimapur: St. Stephen’s Higher Secondary School (SSHSS), Dimapur organised entertainment items from teachers as well as from the students to mark the day. Prizes were also distributed to the winners of co-scholastic activities in various disciplines. Dr. R Francis, principal gave a short speech on the significance of the day.
FBS Wokha: Fernbrook School (FBS) Wokha also celebrated children’s day at its school premises with various activities for the children.
Kiphire: On the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Kiphire. Sarita Yadev launched "child rights ambassador" at DPDB Hall Kiphire.
During the launching programme, Sarita thanked the line department and NGOs for gracing the programme and highlighted about the child right’s provision.
Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kiphire as resource person spoke on child rights.
CMHSS: Christina Memorial Higher Secondary School celebrated Children’s Day by organising an entertaining and educative programme for the children. On the occasion, chief patron, O. Alem delivered the greetings and speech was delivered by principal, Temsujungla.
Teachers performed dance, drama and songs to entertain the students. Annual awards were given to the students by Arenla and blessing prayer was pronounced by the school chaplain.
SJHSRS: St. John Higher Secondary Residential School celebrated Children’s Day at the school auditorium wherein enthusiastic students were entertained with songs presented by the wardens and teachers.
The programme commenced with a prayer by Shibu and a special prayer for all the children was led by the pastor followed by a speech by Vivi. The prize distribution for all year-long activities was also carried out and the programme concluded with a benediction by Lucy.
SMHSS: St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School celebrated Children’s Day and commemorated the birth anniversary of Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru by organising a “fancy dress competition” at the school auditorium.
Rainbow Academy: Rainbow Academy also joined the rest of the country in celebrating Children’s Day wherein teachers presented various activities to entertain the students.
BHSS: Bethesda Higher Secondary School, Dimapur celebrated its 25th Children’s Day under theme, “Children are the heritage of the Lord”.
The celebration held in two sessions for juniors and seniors started with a prayer by headmistress, Lalita Roy. The principal delivered the greetings and highlighted the significance of the day.
The administrator, Esther Murry also exhorted the students and prayed for them. Scripture references from the Holy Bible about the act of obedience as a blessing was shared to the children.
The teaching faculty showcased their love for the students through their talents in the form of songs and dances.
GHSS Phek: Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Phek celebrated Children’s Day wherein the students were exhorted by SDO (Civil) Phek Sadar, Bhavani Sri.
Bhavani spoke on the importance of teachers’ role and how one’s dedication and committed teacher can influence a positive change in a student’s life. She also deliberated on maintaining good and healthy habits and dwelt on the importance of mathematics and science as every competitive exams and aptitude test were based on these subjects.
The programme chaired by the school principal and ended with prayer by PGT (Biology), Luiluile.
PHSS: In observance of the Children’s Day celebration, teachers of Pilgrim Higher Secondary School, Dimapur undertook a voluntary blood drive under the theme, “Blood has life” at the District Civil Hospital, Dimapur.
The drive was undertaken with the hope that it will raise more awareness among the young students to donate blood in service of humanity.
PHSS administrator, Bithungo Kikon said “such drive can be a good example setting, if followed suit by other institutions in coming days as well”.
SPHSS Dimapur: St. Paul Higher Secondary School (SPHSS), Dimapur also organised various programmes to mark the day.
VBIDH Dimapur: Children of VB Infants’ Digital Home (VBIDH), Kevijau Colony, Dimapur presented traditional costumes and other cultural performances to mark the day.
