Sumis celebrate Ahuna festival in Zbto & Dimapur

Three-day Ahuna Mini Hornbill Festival 2019 organised by district administration in collaboration with Sumi Hoho culminated on November 15 at District Sports Council Ground, Zunheboto. 

According to DIPR report, the final day of the celebration witnessed introduction and Ahuna greetings by Sumi Hoho, president, Hekhushe Shikhu; greetings by president of Lotha Hoho and short speeches by Ao Senden president and ENPO president.

The significance of Ahuna was delivered by SKH president, Kashito Yepthomi. 

Highlights of the festival were live music, cultural displays and special presentations. 

 ETC&S: Ecclesia Theological College & Seminary (ETC&S) formerly known as Withee Bible College celebrated Ahuna festival on November 14 at the College Campus, Darogajan Dimapur.

A press release by ETC&S stated that the event was marked with various cultural shows by the students. Guest of honour, director higher education (Rtd), L. Edward Lotha deliberated on “social evils” that prevails in the society and also encouraged the ETC&S family to continue with the spirit of solidarity and oneness. 

The significance of Ahuna festival was delivered by lecturer, Alokali Zhimomi.

SRPUD: Satoi Range Public Union Dimapur (SRPUD) celebrated Ahuna festival at its banker, Ekranipather, Dimapur on November 14 with founder and first president of Satoi Range Students Union (SRSU), Tohuvi Aye as “ahuna papu”.

A press release by SRPUD stated that in his address, Tohuvi stressed on the significance of Ahuna festival and encouraged the gathering to preserve Sumi cultural identities for the upcoming generation. The members were also exhorted by chief engineer PEP, Er. H. Kahuto Sumi. The festival was marked by folk songs and folk dances.

WASC: Walford Area Sumi Community (WASC) celebrated the 3rd Ahuna festival at Walford Sumi Prayer Fellowship Compound DSBC. 

A press release by WASC, stated that advisor, Power, Tovihoto Aye, who graced the celebration stressed on the importance of preserving culture and traditions with values. 

He encouraged the gathering to maintain peace and harmony and to love one another. 

Various cultural activities depicting rituals and practices of the forefathers were performed by elders and womenfolk. The programme was chaired by Abel Tsuqu, while Asso. Pastor, DSBC, Hokito Swu invoked God’s blessing. 

Nikhekhu village: Nikhekhu, one of the oldest villages of Western Sumi observed Ahuna festival on November 14 at village play ground.  Former chief minister, K. L. Chishi graced the event organized by Nikhekhu Village Baptist Church as “ahuna papu (ahuna father)”.

Addressing the gathering, Chishi spoke about the significance of the festival and how it was celebrated in purity and in thankfulness for bountiful harvest. He called upon the people to preserve the age old rich heritage of Sumis. 

Presentation of Ami Kukula, Aphilo Kuwo, Thishole, Ahuna Kibe and melodious male voice by Rev. Nivito Yeptho and group were the cultural items presented during the day.

Pastor of Nikhekhu Baptist Church, P. Viyito Jimo said the invocation while chieftain of the village Y. Isawoto Zhimo welcomed the gathering. V. Victo Sumi, chairman, CBC proposed vote of thanks and Vikheni S. Aye associate pastor pronounced the benediction which was followed by Ahuna raffle draw and feast.
