
Extending support and solidarity with the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Students’ Union (JNUSU), which is protesting against the hostel fee hike, the Nagaland University Students’ Union (NUSU), Lumami carried out a peaceful rally on November 27.
The students marched all the way from the University’s medical centre to the University’s auditorium shouting out slogans in support of the fellow JNU students.
This was stated in a press statement issued by NUSU (L) general secretary, Süyievelü Venuh and information and publicity secretary, Mewekhro Mero.
The rally started with the general secretary of the Union, Süyievelü Venuh, highlighting the importance of the act and addressed how education has been privatized and commercialized in the country.
She encouraged her fellow students to fight for the educational rights stating that quality education was key for the development and future of the nation.
The rally was led by the union’s president, Nito H Khulu, where he highlighted on the ongoing situation at Jawaharlal Nehru University and stressed on the injustice policy measures implemented by the Government of India on one of the affordable University of the country. He said that the demonstration was not an “anti movement” against the central government but as a student to fight for what was right.
The rally was also joined by the research scholar’s of the university, whereby, Sentiyanger, co-convener spoke on behalf of the RS Forum.
An alumni of JNU, Neizanuo also expressed concern about the ongoing chaos at the University.
Meanwhile, NUSU (L) has expressed shock and condemned the ill treatment meted out to the students’ of Jawaharlal Nehru University by the Government and the police personnel and the highhandedness of the government in undertaking such policy measures towards education which it said was at threat.
“Education should not be commercial good handed over to the private cooperates where by academic fees should not be a hindrance for the individuals to impart with quality education”, the statement read.
The union expressed hope that the Government will subsidize education instead of privatizing it.
