Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) approved the much-awaited and needed Bio Safety Level-3 (BSL-3) laboratory at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima on Thursday evening.
This was confirmed by Health & Family Welfare secretary Kesonyu Yhome, who heads the committee to fast-track completion of BSL-3 lab at Kohima and BSL-2 lab at Dimapur.
On the basis of validation of documentation and quality control test run done by the lab team, he said ICMR had approved BSL-3 lab at Kohima.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, Yhome said the lab was approved based on the pyramid presentation – documentation substantiated by video presentation of all rooms in the lab and result of the quality check test run which was sent to ICMR.
To queries as to when the lab would start functioning, Yhome said it depended on ICMR as the reagents would be supplied by the council, adding once the reagents reached the State, the lab would start taking samples to test. He exuded confidence to receive the reagents soon.
On BSL-2 lab at Dimapur, the secretary said preliminary works had begun and technicians from Kohima would join the team there to execute the work.
He said the timeline for completion of BLS-2 lab at Dimapur could not be revealed at the moment even as he expressed apprehension that the weather conditions at the State Capital could delay completion of BSL-3 lab by three days.
“If things move as per plan, then the lab should be completed as per the original schedule or perhaps a few days later,” he added.
