Virtual interface workshop by ICAR-NRC on Mithun

ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema Nagaland organized a virtual interface workshop on June 22 under the topic, “promoting and branding mithun” in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI) of zone VI and VII.

A press release from ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema stated that, the workshop was to promote scientific mithun husbandry as an entrepreneurial activity to economically uplift the tribals through integration of scientific mithun husbandry and its diversified uses. 

Scientists of the institute highlighted various technologies and packages of practices of the institute such as semi-intensive system of rearing mithun mineral blocks, areas specific mineral mixture, portable mineral block dispenser, etc.

During the deliberations, Dr. Bidyut C. Deka, director ICAR-ATARI zone VII and Dr. Anil K. Tripathi, director, ICAR-ATARI zone VI suggested the institute to identify KVKs from each mithun rearing states that would serve as a base for trial and dissemination of various technologies.

Dr. Bhupendra Nath Tripathi, deputy director general (animal science), ICAR lauded the semi-intensive system of mithun rearing as a game-changer and stressed on educating farmers about benefits of alternative system following upon which various other technologies can be integrated into the system of mithun rearing.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, deputy director general (agricultural extension) ICAR, emphasized on the need to identify technology service sectors which can be taken up by KVKs on a mass scale, imparting skill training to the rural youths, farmers and other stakeholders. He also urged them to develop a basket of technologies that can easily be understood by farmers, ready for commercialization. 

Earlier, Dr. Abhijit Mitra, director, ICAR-NRCM gave welcome address in the workshop co-ordinated by Kamni P. Biam, scientist, ICAR-NRC on Mithun. A total of 26 KVKs from Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland, directors of ICAR institutes, experts, and scientists of national repute, scientific faculty, and staff of ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Nagaland participated.
