Working Committee (WC) of NNPGs through its media cell, said it was compelled to respond to recent media reports over the state cabinet’s decision to forward a letter to the ministry of home affairs written by the state Governor to DGP Nagaland for providing security to leaders of Working Committee, NNPGs.

According to WC, NNPGs the safety and security of negotiating team and its leadership was paramount during any political negotiations involving a nation and people’s destiny.

WC, NNPGs pointed out that it consisted of political groups who were not in cease fire with the government of India but upon becoming part of WC, “ a de facto cease fire status was extended to all.” Further, WC, NNPGs also maintained that since the beginning of political talks, requests for personal identity cards for top leadership of all political groups was put forward to the government of India’s Interlocutor . It reiterated that this was to allow Naga leaders “ to carry firearms for their personal safety”.

WC also said that while the convenor and co-convenors “have their own Naga army security apparatus in place”, those involved in political talks by protocol, require additional security escort from state actors in their official travels. WC said the clarification was in response to “those accusing WC,NNPGs of demanding Indian security forces for protection.” It said the same question was best answered by those who were being provided with 24-hour Z category security by Indian security forces and with “Indian MP status and residence in New Delhi.”
