
As the post of president remained vacant following its former president Nyemlang Konyak joining the NSCN (R) on September 26, 2020, the breakaway faction of NSCN (K) held a plenary meeting on December 18, 2020 and elected “gen.(retd)” Niki Sumi as its president.
In a press release, the group’s deputy kilonser of MIP, Nikato Pilot Sumi, stated that the plenary meeting of the council of kilonsers and all high ranking officers of the “People army of Nagaland (PAN)” was chaired by general secretary/ato kilonser Starson Lamkang Naga.
It said that the meeting was necessitated due to the vacancy for the position of president. At the meeting, Starson proposed the name of Niki for the post of president and seconded by kilonser Y. Asang.
“After due deliberations as per the laid down provisions in the Yehzabo, the house unanimously elected General (rtd) Niki Sumi as the President of NSCN/GPRN,” the release stated.
Meanwhile, according to Imphal Times report, quoting highly placed sources, said that Niki Sumi was likely to join the peace process.
The report, published on December 19, stated that a high level Indian army team had received Niki Sumi at the Indo-Myanmar border in Phek district, and was likely to proceed to New Delhi to hold talks with the Government of India.
