On the eve of the 59th Statehood Day of Nagaland this year, it was quite strange that no message of greetings has been received by the media from the state government unlike in the past.
India’s second president Dr. S. Radhakrishnan arrived Kohima on December 1, 1963 (Sunday) to officially declare Nagaland as a state. It may be recalled, that Naga Hills Tuensang Area (NHTA) district in Assam, formed in 1957 through merger of Naga Hills District and Tuensang Frontier Division(under NEFA), became the 16th state of the Indian union through an act of Parliament in 1962.
P. Shilu Ao who headed the first 5-member Executive Council (of the Interim Body) comprising of representatives of Naga tribes under Naga People’s Convention(NPC), became the first Chief Executive Councilor. After the first general election on January 10,1964 P.Shilu Ao (independent from Impur A/C) became the first chief minister of the state.
