District Anglers Wokha Nagaland (DAWN) organised the 2nd DAWN open Angling Competition-cum-Dugout Canoe race in Eco-yan Doyang, Wokha on December 17 and 18, 2021.
In a press release, DAWN president, K N Mhonthung Lotha said that the main objective for organising the event was to promote angling and water sport tourism in the district and the state.
On the first day, after a general body meeting, the Dugout Canoe Race was flagged off by DC Wokha, Orenthung Lotha.
The canoe race was organised mainly for the fishing community of Doyang Reservoir to give them a platform to enjoy recreation apart from their hectic fishing activities.
In the event, Longichan Kikon won the first position while the 19 participants were awarded fishing rods, reels and gift hampers.
In the evening session, a workshop was conducted where several resources persons from abroad, India and Nagaland sensitized and interacted with the participants.
Steve Locket Executive Director International, Masheer Trust gave a video presentation on the endangered Mahseer Conservation. India’s representative to International Games Fishing Association (IGFA) and vice President (Environment) All India Games Fishing Association (AIGFA), Derek Dsouza gave a life demonstration on the use of lure fishing and interacted with the audience.
Advisor AAN and chairman of selectors Nagaland Cricket Association (NCA), Wati Jamir delivered a motivational speech to the anglers and encouraged the angling community to explore river fishing.
Educator and climate reality leader, Dr. Janbemo Humtsoe spoke on creating a sustainable economy while Nodal Officer DDMA Wokha, Jonjibemo Odyou gave a demo on water rescue and safety and spoke on basic emergency water rescue and safety measures.
On the second day, 2nd DAWN open angling competition witnessed participation of 133 anglers from several parts of the state.
The prize distribution ceremony was graced by advisor Horticulture and Border Affairs, Mhathung Yanthan as the special guest.
In his speech, the advisor appreciated DAWN for organising the event in Doyang and in promoting tourism in the state.
In the competition, Sychio Lotha with a total catch of 4.22 kgs emerged as the champion.
