Committee for ISM workers

North East India Welfare Association Chennai (NEIWAC) has informed that Tamil Nadu government has set up state level and zonal level (Chennai Zone, Trichy Zone, Coimbatore Zone and Madurai Zone) Inter-State Migrant (ISM) workers advisory committee on March 31, 2023 under the Labour Welfare and Skill Development department.
A press release by NEIWAC president, Wapangtoshi, who is also pastor, Naga Christian Fellowship Chennai, informed that the advisory committee was formed to build the confidence and to sort out issues relating to the migrant workers and to coordinate the work of creating awareness about their legal rights.
Wapangtoshi, who is also a member of Tamil Nadu state level advisory committee, attended the first Trichy Zone meeting on May 4 in Trichy, wherein the members deliberated about the serious concerns of the ISM workers such as safety and security, health facilities, education for the children of ISM workers, food security and language barriers.
Wapangtosh appealed to all the stakeholders to deal with the ISM workers compassionately for the better understanding of their needs and situations.
The meeting chaired by additional commissioner of labour department, Trichy, K. Jeyabalan, was attended by the joint directors of industrial safety and health concerned, the joint commissioners and assistant commissioners of labour (enforcement), personal assistants (general) to district collectors, representative of the Commissioner of police, Trichy City and representative of superintendent of police from all the concerned districts.
Further, NEIWAC has informed that the Tamil Nadu government has created a separate portal http://labour.tn.gov.in/ism, exclusively for uploading the details of ISM workers working in Tamil Nadu. It has asked all ISM workers to get registered in order to receive benefits from various government schemes and policies.
