Peren Dist. Inter-Village Volleyball tourney begins

The 2nd Peren District Inter-Village Volleyball tournament (Men and Women) organised by Peren District Volleyball Association (PDVA) kicked-off on Wednesday at Mhainamtsi village local ground with OSD to deputy chief minister (Planning & National Highway), Azeu Namcyn Hau, as the special guest.


Altogether, 49 teams from across Peren district are participating in the 4-day event which will culminate on November 4. Speaking at the inaugural programme, Hau expressed gratefulness to Almighty God for bringing all the participating teams from across Peren district together at Mhainamtsi and further, wished that everyone attending the programme be enriched physically and mentally.


Acknowledging the efforts of PDVA in organising the tournament, he encouraged PDVA to continue to work hard with the passion and purpose to take the youths of Peren district forward.
Challenging the youths to cultivate the habit of “playing to win” at a young age, Hau said that “the will to win is more important than the skill to win”.


Sharing his thoughts on the benefits of sports, the special guest opined that sports helps a person not only in staying fit and healthy but also teaches a person to organize his time, strengthen friendship bonds, and builds relationships with others. Encouraging the youths to believe in their dreams and potential, he said ‘to be a good sportsman, one must take care of oneself’.


While stating that participating in sports teaches youngsters the importance of “time-management” at an early age, he maintained that participating in sports helps build leadership skills because sports give players the opportunity to surround themselves with competitive people and role models, and learn from them both.


Also encouraging the players by elucidating the life of great sportspersons in the country, Hau maintained that education system in the State should be based not only on development of the mind but equally focus on development of the physical body.


He further urged youngsters to make sports an integral part of one’s life and encouraged the youth to stay away from drugs and abusive substance. Earlier, the special guest also hoisted the tournament flag and declared the tournament open in the presence of Peren District Volleyball Association (PDVA), Mhainamtsi Village Council, Peren District Athletic Association, Peren District VDB Association, NDPP party leaders from 7 Peren and 6 Tening Assembly Constituencies and other dignitaries.


The inaugural programme was moderated by Adun Malangmei, invocation prayer was offered by pastor of Mhainamtsi Baptist Church, Peiziehube, presidential address by president PDVA, Kirangbe, brief speech was delivered by chairman Mhainamtsi Village Council, Ziudi Thou, special number was presented by Kenlumyile and the oath was administered by Adaube Mpom.
