Dr. N. Kire GHSS observes 75th anniv

Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Seikhazou celebrated 75th anniversary-cum-inauguration of two classrooms constructed through PIG-NECTAR -Lighthouse and community mobilisation at D. Khel Indoor Stadium, Kohima village on December 14 under the theme “Pledge for fulfilment”.


Speaking at the programme as the special guest, Advisor for School Education and SCERT, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, highlighted the challenging beginnings of the school, which started as a private institution. Among the many pioneers, he specially credited four individuals, Lt. Diechülie Haralu, Lt. Lhousielie Yiese, Lt. Zeneituo Sachü, and Lt. Lhouzhalie Sorhie, as the driving forces behind the school’s establishment. Dr. Yhome also expressed gratitude to the D. Khel community leaders for their ongoing support for the school.
He added that Dr. Neilhouzhii Kire was not only the first matriculate in Kohima village but he was the first Naga matriculate who later on became a doctor and was applauded for his humanitarian service to people.


The advisor highlighted that in 1956, when Dr. Kire established the school, it was a private school known as Naga High School. “Subsequently, the government took over and elevated it to Government Middle School. By 1982, the institution underwent a transformative evolution into a high school, and in 2014, it advanced to the status of a higher secondary school”, he informed. Dr. Yhome characterized this progression as a momentous milestone for the school, recognizing the substantial effort involved in bringing about this transformation.


He also emphasized that teachers in government schools undergo a rigorous selection process to ensure the best educators for students, highlighting the transformative power of education in achieving freedom. Dr. Yhome commended the students for their outstanding academic achievements, celebrating their success in producing toppers too. He underscored the pivotal role of education as the cornerstone for building a thriving society and urged everyone to strive for the advancement of the education system and infrastructure.


Dr. Neikiesalie Kire, son of Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire, briefly discussed the renaming of a school in honor of his father. Originally known as Government Higher Secondary School Seikhazou, the institution was renamed after Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire in 2017. Dr. Neikiesalie Kire also provided a concise account of his father’s life, highlighting Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire’s birth in 1900 in Kohima village and his historic achievement as the first Naga matriculate after successful completion of his matriculation from Shillong Government High School in 1918.
Following this, he pursued his education at the Berry White Medical School in Dibrugarh, ultimately earning an LMP (Licentiate Medical Practitioner) in 1922. Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire passed away on May 15, 1969.


He also emphasized the pressing need for science streams in the higher secondary school within the village and urged the relevant department to review the proposed initiative.


Retired headmistress K. Mary also reflected on her tenure as headmistress at the school.
The programme commenced with an invocation by CRC, Chedema Model Pastor Rokoviu, an esteemed alummi of the school, and welcome address was delivered by Rose Chishi.
