The 55th sports meet of Kezoma Village Students’ Union (KVSU) coomenced on December 28 at Kezoma village, Kohima. Speaking at the inaugural programme, District Sports Officer (DSO) for Kohima and Tseminyu district, Department of Youth Resources and Sports, Zhopovi Zecho emphasized on the state government’s significant attention to the sports sector. He highlighted the efforts being made to enhance sporting infrastructures and provide ample opportunities for athletes through training, coaching, and career development.
Zecho also pointed out that individuals with a serious commitment to sports can now pursue a career in the field, with varied opportunities being created by the current state government. He informed that there is a 3% job reservation in the government sector for those who excel in sports, offering a valuable employment avenue alongside opportunities in the private sector.
Zecho also highlighted the progress in sporting infrastructure development, stating that as part of the Khelo India mission, various sports academies are being established in all districts across the state to train young people in various sports. The sports officer urged students, particularly those in Kezoma village, to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the government.
He further announced that the Department of Youth Resources and Sports will be conducting selection trials for admission to the state sports hostel for the 2024 sessions, focusing on disciplines such as sepaktakraw for girls, athletics for girls, and football for boys at the Indira Gandhi Stadium. The trials are scheduled to take place from January 18-20. Zecho encouraged individuals to participate or seek further information by visiting the district sports office in Kohima. Earlier, the programme was led by games and sports secretary, Rokovito Kisotso, while assistant games and sports secretary, Kevipodi Tase, administered the oath-taking.
