Clouds of war in Middle East

April 15, 2024 | by admin

Iran’s attack on Israel early Sunday morning was the latest incident to stoke fears of a wider regional conflict breaking out in the Middle East during Israel’s campaign in Gaza. The attack ratcheted up regional tensions, confirming long-held fears about the Israel-Hamas war spiralling into a broader conflict duration. As more than 300 drones and missiles headed towards Israel in the early hours of Sunday, the country was able to successfully put to test its aerial defence array, along which it received help from allies, and successfully blocked 99 percent of the projectiles and thus prevented any major damage. This comes days after Iran vowed that it would respond to an Israeli strike on Iranian diplomatic compound in Damascus on April 1 that killed two generals. Iran’s assault was to show to its citizens that it won’t stand by when its assets are racked up, and that it was serious when it threatened revenge. Israel’s military had suffered a bruising and humiliating setback at the hands of a far less equipped Hamas, whose militants from Gaza stormed Israel on October 7.

On Israel’s part, a revenge attack or counterattack will also bolster the confidence of its citizens about its military, especially as the Israel Defence Force(IDF) is bogged down in Gaza for more than six months following Israel’s declaration of war on Hamas. There are several factors to consider with regard to the heightened tensions in the middle east. Israel has a history of responding to attacks, and given the scale of Iran’s action, some form of retaliation could be expected. However, the nature and extent of any Israeli response would be influenced by various strategic and diplomatic considerations. If Israel retaliates, there is a risk of further escalation.

Iran has already warned of a “stronger response” to any retaliation. This tit-for-tat dynamic could potentially lead to a more serious conflict. The involvement of major powers like Russia and the United States could complicate matters further. Both countries have interests in the region and alliances that could draw them into a broader conflict.

The US has pledged support for Israel, while Russia’s role would likely be influenced by its strategic interests and relations with both Iran and Israel. World leaders and international organizations are calling for restraint and a return to diplomacy to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control. The G7 leaders and the United Nations Security Council are involved in discussions to manage the crisis. The Middle East is a complex region with many interlinked issues and conflicts. An escalation between Iran and Israel could have wider repercussions, potentially affecting neighbouring countries and leading to a broader regional conflict. Iran is an avowed promoter of terrorism by aiding, arming, financing and patronising Islamic outfits not only against the west but also against Arab nations. Iranian is fighting a proxy war in Syria where its mercenaries have killed several thousand people. Iran has also built up a huge missile system in Syria directed against Israel. While there is a possibility of retaliation and further escalation, the outcome will depend on a range of factors, including international diplomatic efforts and the actions of the involved parties. It’s a fluid situation, and the hope is that diplomacy will prevail to prevent a larger conflict.
