Following the state government’s acceptance of the 5-Point Charter of demands by the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry(DCCI) on April 29 and subsequent calling of the statewide indefinite shutter down strike from April 30, markets across Dimapur wore a surprisingly deserted look.
Unlike on Monday, April 29 during the 6-hour relaxation period where roads were jammed with vehicles as people went on panic buying, on Tuesday there were hardly a handful of shoppers in most markets such as- New market, Super market and Purana bazaar.
Even traffic movement was fluid with no traffic jam in any part of the city.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, some of the vendors admitted that they were expecting less customers since most people stocked essential supplies in bulk on April 29 during the relaxation period from 12 noon to 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, there was a noticeable variation in prices as most of the vegetable items became dearer between DMC approved rates on April 24 and April 30. Some of the items such as potato, tomato and cabbage hiked by Rs. 5, green chilly by Rs. 20, ladies finger by Rs. 25, cucumber by Rs. 10 to 15 and ginger by Rs. 30.

Some of the shoppers expressed apprehension that once the rates were hiked and go unchecked, they will become permanent feature till the next upward revision.
DMC LDA market rate & quality control Satya Narayan Yadav, told this reporter that the DMC was not responsible for the upward variation of rates but only approved the market price as quoted by the wholesalers at Marwaripatti.
Yadav further informed buyers to report any malpractices by the vendors to DMC and assured to take appropriate actions.
