In a significant development, Ang Mai-led faction of the NSCN (K) has expressed its desire to engage in talks with Government of India. In a joint statement NSCN (K) chairman ‘maj. gen.’ (Retd) Ang Mai, vice chairman Nyeiton Konyak and general secretary Kughalu Mulatonu, however, said that the political dialogue with India would only be for sovereignty or anything above the Indian constitution. In case of a temporary arrangement, they said it would be above the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position.

The group also announced that it would refrain from engaging with any non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society groups, political and government bodies, but “shall only be the guardian of Naga sovereignty.”

They stressed that Nagas could not serve both God and Mammon, nor nationalism and factionalism.
With change of century and generations, and change in leaderships, the group said Nagas must only serve Naga nationalism and no other.

Against the backdrop of NNC’s Shillong Accord of November 11, 1975 surrendering to India, they recalled that the founding fathers of NSCN (GPRN) laid the foundation of Naga nationalism for sovereignty based upon the principle of “Self-sufficiency, Socialism and Nagaland for Christ”.
The group declared that these three principles would be the guiding light throughout Nagas’ journey to freedom.

They said the “Khaplang Plan” of 1997 for peace and unity of the Nagas within the principle of “forgive and forget” as incorporated under the banner of Nagaland for Christ remained irreversible.
The group clarified that peace with India and Myanmar would be initiated formally not out of weakness, but to ensure peace, prosperity and development in the entire Naga-inhabited areas.

They said the NSCN and its Council of Naga Churches (CNC) would be actively involved in sowing the seeds of Nagaland for Christ in the entire Naga-inhabited areas. “Nagas have always kept its doors opened for neighbours and, today, the NSCN will not shy away from this moral responsibility,” they stated.
