Narendra Modi scripted history as he took the oath of office as prime minister for a third straight term, becoming the first non-Congress leader and second after Jawaharlal Nehru to achieve the feat. This was possible when the BJP with 240 MPs got the support of other NDA allies to take the total to 293 and cross the half-way mark of 272. While the numbers of the BJP have decreased, it does not signify an end to its governance agenda, focused on India’s development and cultural revival. Even in the composition of the NDA ministry, the BJP has retained all the top portfolios while leaving the allies with less significant portfolios. The formation of Modi’s 3.0 cabinet is a clear message that the BJP’s political strength and ideological commitment remain intact, regardless of the seat count. There was earlier speculation that Amit Shah could be dropped from the ministry due to his harsh attacks on TDP leader Naidu and later JDU leader Nitish Kumar. However, the same team remains, with Rajnath Singh and, interestingly, Nirmala Sitharaman, who, despite not being an elected MP, has retained the finance portfolio. Modi’s speeches have drawn heat for their anti-Muslim rhetoric. At a campaign rally on April 21, 2024, he referred to Muslims as “infiltrators.” He later doubled down on these remarks, suggesting that if India’s largest opposition party, the Indian National Congress, came to power, the wealth of Hindus would be snatched and given to communities that “have too many children,” a seemingly lightly veiled reference to Indian Muslims. The retention of stalwarts like Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, S. Jaishankar, Nitin Gadkari, and Bhupendra Yadav sends a robust signal to the Opposition: the BJP is unwavering in its core governance philosophy and unwilling to compromise on key ministerial positions. This strategic move by Prime Minister Narendra Modi not only consolidates the BJP’s position but also reaffirms its commitment to foundational policies concerning internal and external security, economic reform, and infrastructure development. The composition of the new Modi cabinet sends a powerful message: the BJP’s ideological base remains resolute. By retaining key figures like Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Nitin Gadkari, who have been instrumental in driving the party’s vision and policies, the Modi government underscores its commitment to continuity in its ideological stance. The inclusion of loyalists and seasoned politicians like Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Manohar Lal Khattar in the new Modi cabinet underscores the BJP’s strategy to maintain strong ideological coherence. These leaders are not only experienced administrators but also staunch supporters of the party’s foundational values. Their presence in the cabinet ensures that these priorities will remain at the forefront of the BJP-led government’s agenda. Moreover, the inclusion of BJP president JP Nadda further reinforces the message that the party’s politics and core values will remain uncompromised. The Opposition’s narrative that the BJP would be compelled to cede important cabinet posts to its allies has been effectively countered. The reappointment of experienced ministers indicates a continuity of policy and an emphasis on stability and experience in governance. The new Modi cabinet exemplifies a strategic consolidation of power, reinforcing the BJP’s leadership narrative and preparing India for a future characterized by strong security measures, proactive Hindutva and sustainable growth.
