Just days before the urban local body (ULB) elections, NDPP candidate from Ward 22 (DMC) Orenponi Humtsoe alleged that BJP supporters disrupted her get-together meeting on June 22, besides creating a ruckus during the distribution of voter slips on June 21.

Addressing the media, Orenponi claimed that while she was attending a gathering in Rainbow Colony, around 30 to 40 cars allegedly with BJP supporters had arrived, shouting, honking, and circling the colony multiple times, stopped outside the venue where the gathering was held. Due to the commotion, she said she could not deliver her speech. Expressing concern over potential disruptions on polling day, Humtsoe called for increased security in the ward. She also claimed that many voters were now apprehensive due to the incident, appealing for peaceful, free, and fair elections.

Asked about lodging a formal complaint, she replied that she had informed the sector commander immediately, which resulted in prompt deployment of security personnel. She said council members of Rainbow Colony were present during the gathering. She mentioned that a formal complaint would also be filed as the BJP supporters’ actions violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

She claimed that her campaign was based on a friendly contest with the BJP for overall development, emphasising the democratic nature of the elections. She declined to speculate on the motives behind the BJP supporters’ actions. Meanwhile, chief agent Ruth Pochury supported the claims, alleging that the BJP youth were not from Ward 22.
