Nursing student assaulted at District Hospital Dimapur; 1 held

A second-year nursing student of School of Nursing, District Hospital Dimapur (DHD), was allegedly assaulted by unidentified miscreant(s) inside the dental OPD room, DHD here on Monday.


According to police officials present at the site, the incident reportedly took place at around 8:30-9 a.m. The victim was reportedly found in a traumatized state by her colleague, with her clothes torn. Reportedly, the victim, around 20-year-old, was dusting the OPD when she was allegedly assaulted.


It was learnt that an FIR was lodged with the Women Police Station by the hospital authority, and investigation underway.


Meanwhile, commissioner of police Dimapur, K Sophie, later informed that the police have apprehended on person as per CCTV footage, and detained for questioning. Though the accused has admitted to have assaulted the student, CP said that motive behind the act was yet to be ascertained as the investigation was still underway.


Paiwang assures stringent action: Health & Family Welfare minister P. Paiwang Konyak assured stringent punishment for the accused and extended financial assistance to the victim’s family for further treatment.


According to sources, the minister rushed to District Hospital Dimapur upon receiving news of the assault and convened an emergency meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner, Medical Superintendent, Western Chakhesang Public Organization, the victim’s village council, and her parents.


He also thanked the CP and DC for their swift action and wished the victim a speedy recovery. Medical Superintendent of DHD, Dr. Keveduyi Theyo, stated that the recent installation of 92 CCTV cameras in the hospital significantly aided the investigation.


He credited the minister, law enforcement officials, hospital staff, and nursing faculty for their support, which helped the victim gather the courage to speak out. Theyo informed that the victim’s condition was stable.

TSUD condemns: Tenyimi Students’ Union Dimapur (TSUD) has strongly condemned the assault on a nursing student at District Hospital Dimapur, terming it a heinous act of violence against a dedicated healthcare professional.


In a condemnation note, TSUD president Sotilo Seb and general secretary Chiehepe Kapfo, expressed shock and outrage over the incident, stating that such acts are unacceptable and must not be tolerated.


Highlighting the vital role of healthcare workers, especially nurses, in society, TSUD asserted that they deserve respect and protection, not violence and abuse. The union emphasized that the attack on the nursing student was not just an assault on an individual but on the entire healthcare community.


TSUD urged the authorities to take immediate and decisive action to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. It further stressed that such incidents must be met with zero tolerance and that measures should be implemented to guarantee the safety and security of all healthcare professionals.


TSUD expressed support and solidarity with the victim and her family, and reaffirmed its commitment to support and protect those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
