State’s lone Lok Sabha member of parliament S Supongmeren Jamir on Wednesday highlighted the plight of the Nagaland’s village guards and sought the intervention of the union home minister.

Speaking during the ongoing Parliament Session, Supongmeren said the VGs, despite playing a pivotal role in guarding 120 villages along India-Myanmar border, covering six districts– Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Meluri, Noklak and Longleng since its inception in 1957, had been neglected by both the state government and the ministry of home affairs.

He also cited the monthly salary of Rs. 3,000, annual clothing allowances of Rs. 100 and monthly ration allowance of Rs. 60 being allotted to the VGs at present to provide a sense of the level of neglect under which they were operating.

He urged MHA to revamp and strengthen the VGs and deploy them along the border, instead of promoting border fencing and free movement restriction policies.
