To encourage farmers, mostly pineapples growers, the department of horticulture constructed wayside fruit stalls along NH 29, Medziphema on Tuesday. The stalls were inaugurated by commissioner horticulture, Government of India, Dr. Gorakh Singh. The commissioner while inaugurating the stalls said the said the department of agriculture in collaboration with the centre to improve production and productivity of horticulture crops by harnessing the potential of North East region and to enhance employment opportunities has laid special focus on horticulture crops. It may be mentioned that to improve livelihood opportunities and bring prosperity to the North Eastern Region, the Horticulture Training Mission (HTM) was launched in 2001-02 by the central government. According to the commissioner, under HTM, various areas on plantation works, area expansion, post harvest management, processing, value additions, including that of medicinal and aromatic plants, marketing and exports would be taken by the horticulture department. He further called upon farmers to visit Central Institute of Horticulture at Medziphema in order to avail facilities and to enhance production by using the available technology. The department constructed only seven stalls, but plans to construct more such stalls in the coming days for the benefit of the farmers, DHO Eyongol Angami said. Village council, head GB and few farmers from Medziphema village attended the function.
