Minister for Urban Development and Higher Education, Dr. Sh\u00fcrhozelie Liezietsu on Monday said that stabilizing population growth was the essential requirement for development of sustainable economy, and suggested that comprehensive strategies be made in Nagaland to attain National Socio- Demographic Goals as envisaged in the National Population Policy 2008. Speaking on the occasion of World Population Day, Dr. Sh\u00fcrhozelie said that population stabilization was the key towards attainting the National Socio-Demographic Goals which asks for addressing child health services, free and compulsory education, reduction of infant and maternal mortality rate, delay marriage for girls, contain spread of HIV, RTI, STI. Stating that India had increased its population by five times as against global population increase of three times, the minister said that population explosion in India may derail all development progress if I is not tackled. Towards achieving population stability, he said that opportunities of gainful and productive activities should be created. The minister further added that effective population stabilization will result through integrated package of essential services at village and household levels through inter-sectoral coordination and convergence. Chairman NKVIB, Dr. Nicky Kire, said that education, delaying girls\u2019 marriage, promotion of use of contraceptives and promotion of small family norms were factors for effective population stabilization. He underlined the importance of involvement of married partners in family planning. Dr. Nicky Kire also stated that the church should come out strongly and advocate the importance of family planning and population stabilization. Speaking on the theme \u201cSmall Family- overall development\u201d Alemtemshi Jamir, additional chief secretary and development commissioner, said that over population and over consumption were the two fundamental issues involving population growth. He explained that over population meant the number of people exceeding the carrying capacity of its environment and over-consumption meaning out pacing of sustainable capacity of resources. While maintaining that population growth of Nagaland had increased from 3.69 lakhs in 1961 to 12.80 lakhs in 2011, Alemtemshi Jamir questioned if the state had enough carrying capacity to sustain its population. He stated that the way to manage growth of population in the present scenario should be relevant to the existing crowd in the state with emphasis on urban population. He also touched upon basic issues involved with population explosion such as food and water supply, social security. Also giving the thematic speech on Biblical perspective, Rev. Dr. Chingmak Chang, director of Eleutheros Christian Society Tuensang, said that the church is a major platform in Nagaland with huge influential power, and added that advocating population stability by the church would be one solution. Rev Dr. Chang also stated that big family was an indication of social security in rural areas or amongst lower class people, and urged policy makers to look into the issue of social security or food security. President of Naga Mothers\u2019 Association, Abei\u00fc Meru said that Naga society was strongly patriarchal where women in rural areas have no reproductive rights and other health services. She also added that maternal mortality was still a serious concern in the state due to selective preference for a boy child. In this regard, the NMA president said that unless the mindset of society changes towards the rights of women and children and the resistance of male sterilization, population control cannot take place in Nagaland. Speaking on the perspective of the youth, Hekani Jakhalu, director of Youth Net, said that the huge number of young population in the country can become a boon to the society if good policies are framed and executed properly. She stated that one of the greatest challenges of a youthful population was in dealing with the high number of new entrants to the job market each year which could lead to unemployment and other social problems if the labour force is not absorbed. She also pointed out other challenges faced by youth due to over population such as problem of delinquency, strain on health sector, industrial sector, burden on working population etc. Putting forward certain remedial solutions to these, Hekani Jakhalu said that youths can be sensitized on population and health issues, explore new strategies to improve employment situation, government should encourage labour intensive industries, address problem of rising teenage pregnancies, spread of STD and promote sex education. Earlier, commissioner and secretary Health and Family Welfare, Menukhol John gave the welcome address while Dr. Kezevituo Keditsu, managing director of Putuonuo Nursing Home led the business session. <\/p>\n
