The spawning pool is a large circular chamber which receives adequate supply of fresh oxygenated water from overhead water tank, Kere informed.

He explained that showers are fixed inside the pool for oxygenation of water, while water is made to circulate in the pool, so that when the mature ripe fish injected with synthetic hormones like ovaprim and pimozide are introduced in the pool and the fish get a feel of the natural environment.

CEO informed that the hormone was administered to both male and female brood fish in a single dose at the rate of 0.10-0.20 ml ovaprim/kg body weight of male and 0.25-0.80ml ovaprim/kg body weight of female. The injected brooder fish are introduced into the spawning pool at the ratio of 2 male: 1 female.

He informed that the fertilized eggs are then transferred to the hatching pools, which are smaller in size and are serially arranged and the fertilized ova are kept in the hatching pool for 15-19 hours. Kere then said spawns are collected by nets and are transferred to nurseries where they are reared till they grow to a fry or advanced fingerlings stage. He further informed that the introduced breed fish species were catla, rohu, goni and mrigal.

Fish Farmer Development Agency (FFDA) fishery department Dimapur “induced fish breeding” got underway on Tuesday at Jorapukhuri, Dimapur.
