It was not the first case where some crooks open a shop in Dimapur by offering unbelievable discounts on branded items to lure gullible customers and after collecting huge sums of money, disappear leaving scores poorer by thousands if not a few lakh rupees.\nHundreds of customers who went to collect their items after paying full advanced payment from Sri Komal Traders Monday near new over bridge, Burma Camp, were rudely wakened from their dreams to the reality, that it was just another fraud.
\nM\/s Sri Komal Traders opened on June 6 at Burma camp area near Bible Society of India office, offering 45%to 50% discounts on branded items and promised customers delivery after the end of 15 days of accepting full advance. The scheme works on a cycle and reaches a saturation point when the number of depositors gradually decreases.
\nThat happened by design and the promoter identified as one C. Thangaraj gave everyone the slip and vanished. Irate depositors gathered in front of the shop which had already closed down.
\nThe fraud firm offered HP Pavilion G4 laptop at Rs.19, 000; 3-door H\/W steel almirah at Rs.4200; Godrej refrigerator (170 litre) at Rs.4500; LCD television at Rs.14,000 and sofa with centre table set at Rs.3600.
\nWhat was also surprising is that C.T hangaraj managed to produce a No Objection Certificate (NoC) purportedly by the OC East Police Station but also obtained Sales Tax registration issued by the Taxes department signed by an assistant commissioner of taxes and DMC trade license.
\nDepositors claimed they had every reason to believe that C. Thangaraj ran a genuine business after being shown all the records. OC East P.S. Atu Zumv\u00fc however denied outright issuing any such NoC. He told this Reporter that police were not authorized to issue any such NoC nor provide spot verification report. He said a criminal case was to be registered, based on complaints of the duped depositors.
\nZumv\u00fc nevertheless wondered how the licensed was issued and even showed this Reporter the seized documents i.e. trade license issued by DMC and registration certificate certified by taxes department Dimapur; the registration certificate was issued U\/S 24 and 25 of the Nagaland Value Added Tax Act, 2005.
\nInspector Zumv\u00fc disclosed that seven depositors filed a complaint Monday against Sri Komal Traders and its promoter C. Thangaraj that they had been cheated of Rs.81,970 paid as advance payment for items.
\nThe owner of the building told this Reporter that he was apprehensive of being duped by C. Thangaraj dealing in \u201corder items\u201d and sought and received Rs.50, 000 as advance security. He also disclosed that there were five other persons, all from south India but could not name any of them. <\/p>\n
