{"id":111395,"date":"2016-03-31T00:08:32","date_gmt":"2016-03-31T00:08:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/151.106.38.4\/2016\/03\/31\/nagaland-potential-to-eye-global-coffee-market\/"},"modified":"2016-03-31T00:08:32","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T00:08:32","slug":"nagaland-potential-to-eye-global-coffee-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/2016\/03\/31\/nagaland-potential-to-eye-global-coffee-market\/","title":{"rendered":"Nagaland potential to eye global coffee market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img src=\/old_site\/><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Coffee plantation on 5000 HA of land by 2019 in Nagaland<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">A coffee expert from South Africa, Dr. Pieter, on Wednesday asserted that Nagaland with the favourable climatic condition for growing coffee could be a contender in world coffee industry.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>Addressing media persons at the directorate Land resource here, Dr. Pieter informed that he had visited Mokokchung, Wokha, Zunheboto and Kohima districts and expressed confidence that Nagaland has the potential for sustaining economic growth through coffee. Dr. Pieter, director of Himalayan Network and Noble Cause South Africa, said his visit to the state was to secure coffee source.<\/div>\n<div>In Kohima district, he visited Kigwema and after sample testing it was found that the coffee tasted like cashew flavour. At Litami village under Zunheboto district, the coffee tasted like citrus nutty flavour, which, he said was very peculiar in Himalayan region.<\/div>\n<div>At Kubza village under Mokokchung district, Dr. Pieter said coffee tasted like sweet-honey flavour and said he has never come across such coffee during his 20 years of service in coffee industry.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>Also at Wokha village, Dr. Pieter said the coffee tasted like almond strawberry creamy coffee. He said besides the potentiality, the challenges were how to let the Nagas get the taste of coffee.<\/div>\n<div>According to Dr. Pieter, coffee plants could be harvested in four years. Out of 5000 hectares coffee plantation, 8000 metric tons could be harvested and could can fetch Rs. 200 crore.<\/div>\n<div>Land Resources department director, Mhathung Yanthan informed that the department in collaboration with the Coffee Board of India would be taking up coffee plantation covering an area of 5,000 hectares across the state by 2019-2020. He said if coffee could be well harvested over 10,000 metric tons, there was a potential of exporting coffee to European market.<\/div>\n<div>Kohima district will have the highest cultivation in a total area of 774 hectares by 1,548 households while Kiphire and Longleng districts have the least with 345 hectare each for 690 households.<\/div>\n<div>The programme commenced during 2015-16, wherein 6 lakh coffee saplings were raised and planted in 230 hectares by 450 households in seven districts of the state.<\/div>\n<div>According to the plan, the land to be used for coffee plantation will be 917 hectares in 2016-17, 1,190 hectares in 2017-18, In 2018-19 1,710 hectares and 953 hectares in 2019-20, Mhathung said.<\/div>\n<div>Mhathung Yanthan, informed that Coffee Board of India provides two varieties of coffee in Nagaland &#8212; Robusta and Arabica. He said the department was taking up coffee plantation in Nagaland in view of the favourable climatic condition and market potential.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>Yanthan pointed out that five year comprehensive plan for development of coffee in Nagaland has been prepared for a total area of 5000 Ha, covering all districts of Nagaland to be implemented in convergence with the coffee Board of India. He said there were no targeted groups for selection of beneficiaries but offers those who were capable besides land availability and had interest in coffee farming. Altogether, the department has identified 10,000 households from across the state.<\/div>\n<div>With the visit of Dr. Pieter, Yanthan expressed hope that the partnership would grow stronger and provide the state all the technical support. Stating that the department has worked out the marketing strategy, he expressed hope that the state would be able to produce quality organic coffee for export as well as for local consumption.
