Nagaland is one of biodiversity hotspots of the world in Himalayan region, where a total of 3,452 endangered plant and wild life species, including 2,250 flowering plants, 22 bamboo, 430 orchids, 200 butterflies, 40 herpetofauna, 494 birds and 106 mammal were found, deputy manger of Foundation Ecological Security (FES) North East cell Guwahati CCA management planning, Sudip Kanta Basistha said here Saturday.\nAddressing workshop on Community Conserved Area Management Planning organized by Khonoma Nature Conservation & Tragopan Sancturay (KNCTS) Trust in collaboration with FES NE cell at Community Hall Khonoma, Basistha elaborated on various factors which threaten the biodiversity, loss, degradation and fragmentation of ecosystem, pollution and climate change.
\nHe stressed on the need for protection of bio diversity by way of community conservation initiatives, mass awareness programme, promoting research, conservation education and adoption of sustainable development measures.
\nHe said some species of Nagaland like Blyth Tragopan, porcupine, Pangolin, Hornbill, Elephant, Mrs. Hume pheasant, magur will be heading for natural extinction if no step taken for conservation.
\nIn his speech, deputy manager FES NE office Alakesh Malla Baruah stressed the need of framework in community conserved area for self initiated and externally supported, participation of all stakeholders, sustaining the initiative, establishing collective decision making the process and addressing conservation , governance and livelihood related issues through proper planning.
\nBaruah said the scope of framework may include action plan like biodiversity studies specific species assessment distribution, density, habitat, threats, and measures, social dynamics traditional knowledge, governance system, land use pattern, livelihood assessment and others.
\nIn his address, DFO Kohima Sidramappa M. Chalkapure said Khonoma known for its forest conservation initiative both national and international level, urged the Khonoma villagers to work harder for nature\u2019s conservation with technical improvement. He said around 400 community conserved forest along with the state forest department and around 10 doing well to the standard of national and international. The first and second sessions were conducted by Khriekhotuo Mor chairman KNCTS and kevich\u00fclie Meyase secy. Environment respectively, opening prayer was proposed by Kose Sec\u00fc secy wildlife.
