Children as young as TWO are to paraded on the catwalk at a mini \u201cMiss World\u201d contest. Nursery-age toddlers and primary school girls will be judged on their looks and \u00adpersonality in the pageant, which has been condemned by child welfare campaigners as \u00ad\u201cdamaging, harmful and \u00adunwelcome\u201d. The Mini Miss International competition will see girls \u00admodelling outfits in formal, sportswear and fashion \u00adcategories. News of the pageant, to be held in London in October, comes amid mounting concern over the sexualisation and \u00adcommercial- isation of young children. Lucie Russell, of children\u2019s mental health charity Young Minds, said: \u201cThis contest may well have a detrimental effect on the young girls involved\u201d. \u201cBut on a wider level it also sends out a dangerous message to other children that appearance is all that matters.\u201d And Michael Connellan, of the Family and Parenting \u00adInstitute, added: \u201cChildhood must be \u00addefended. Parents don\u2019t want their children experiencing too much too young.\u201d Girls will model outfits in formal, sportswear and fashion categories during the contest. Toddlers under five in the \u201cbaby beautiful\u201d section will be dressed up in party frocks and carried or walked down the catwalk by their mums. A boys\u2019 contest called Little Man International is to be held alongside the girls\u2019 show. Organiser Pam Boon insisted: \u201cThis is a hobby, it\u2019s having fun. It\u2019s about children enjoying themselves.\u201d Contestants pay up to \u00a3100 to enter the \u00adcontest, and prizes include a Nintendo Wii \u00adgames console and shopping vouchers. There was outrage last week when a beauty \u00adparlour for children was launched in Brentwood \u2013 where TV reality show The Only Way Is Essex is filmed. It came after a Mothers\u2019 Union report on the sexualisation of children urged a crackdown on suggestive clothes like padded bras for young girls. Former Miss Commonwealth India Ms Boon, 50, insisted her \u00adpageant will be \u201cage appropriate\u201d and that girls will not have to wear heavy make-up. The mum-of-four, from \u00adColchester, Essex, said: \u201cA lot of them don\u2019t need mascara. People love to show off their children.\u201d Shadow health and social care minister Emily Thornberry said: \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate. Girls should be doing better things with their time than putting on lipstick and wearing high heels at age four.\u201d<\/p>\n
