June 30 for a period of one year.

NH general secretary Mutiskhoyo Yhobuh in a statement said that “the abominable law which enables the security forces to fire upon or otherwise use force, even to the causing of death and where such actions taken upon cannot be challenged in the court of law”, has no place in a civilized and modern society.

Reminding that the hoho has time and again urged upon the Centre to repeal AFSPA, Yhobuh said “we reiterate our call to the Government for immediate revocation of AFSPA in Nagaland”.

NSF: Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has vehemently condemned the decision of Centre declaring the entire Nagaland state as a “disturbed area” and by extending Armed Force (Special Powers) Act 1958 for one year which authorizes Indian Army without retribution, to arrest without warrant or kill on mere suspicion.

NSF president Subenthung Kithan and general secretary Boveio Puokai Duo in a press release further appealed for “demilitarization of frontiers and borders by the Government of India, which are all supplemented by the operational influence under AFSPA to subjugate human security”.

With political negotiation and peace process between Government of India and Nagas in place, NSF said any policy that harms the atmosphere of trust and confidence should be summarily repealed at the earliest.

“India that prides itself to be the world’s largest democracy has adopted for itself the very repressive, oppressive and inhuman instrument to subjugate a people much against their will and aspiration”, NSF stated.

AFSPA has empowered the Indian military and paramilitary with unlimited supremacy “to extend their evil claws and judicial impunity to arrest, torture, rape, kill and to commit everything inhuman”, NSF said and urged upon all Nagas to condemn the inhuman and draconian act.

NMA: Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) in a memorandum to Nagaland Governor said that it viewed with serious concern the sudden decision of Centre to extend DA Act over the whole state of Nagaland.

The memorandum signed by its president Abeiu Meru and advisor Dr. Rosemary Dzuvichu said it was shocking and questionable– the unilateral decision, despite so much efforts for maintaining peace by Naga mass based organizations and the hope of a peaceful solution to the long drawn Naga political issue.

NMA it is a strong signal that the Government of India was unable to understand the gravity and impact of such a decision that will have on its people, women and children.

NMA opined that the situation in the state does not merit the extension of the Act and expressed strong objections and demand to lift the DA Act to allow all to live as free citizens of democracy.

It said NMA has time and again in their meetings with the Prime Minister, Union Minister of State for Home, National BJP president and the National Security Advisor had reiterated their demand for the repeal of AFSPA in the interest of peace and the Naga people.

The impunity and immunity of AFSPA for decades in Nagaland and other states has blotted and blackened the pages of Indian democracy, NMA said. While condemning all forms of violence by state and non state actors, NMA said the worst impact of both the DA Act and AFSPA has been felt most by women and children.

NMA has reiterated for the repeal of the AFSPA and the withdrawal of the Disturbed Areas Act from the state at the earliest, to avoid further militarization, which it said “has been the bane of our lives”.

Further, NMA also sought the immediate withdrawal of Naga IRBs from all parts of the country and to re-deploy back in the state to maintain peace and security.

“This is also in consonance with the recommendations submitted by the NSA on the same” NMA added. “We believe our border and internal security can be best dealt with our own police forces and therefore demand the withdrawal of all Indian armed forces and paramilitary forces, in the interest of building confidence and peace”, NMA said.

Meanwhile, NMA has also sought the genuine efforts the Governor to ensure that the ceasefire is brought back between NSCN (K) and the Government of India.

“As the Constitutional Head of the state, we expect democratic principles to be respected and exercised even in the most trying circumstances for the sake of bringing peace in our land”, NMA appealed.

“As mothers who have witnessed thousands of our men, women and children traumatized, maimed and killed, under the impunity of the AFSPA for decades, we appeal for the spirit of peace and justice and we hope you will take cognizance of the voices of women in the state”, NMA stated.

YAN: Youth Association of Nagaland (YAN) termed that Disturbed Area (DA) tag in Nagaland as nothing but “India’s updated mentality of back dragging to square one without any improvement to standard with other advanced countries in terms of policies and various developments”.

In a press note, YAN president V. Hetoi Chishi and spokesperson Alise Sangtam said any act under APSPA was “draconian and anti-human law”. YAN said the chronology and nature of the act itself intends suppression, oppression, total discriminations and subjugation.

“Nagas are no longer to be treated with such laws and shall no more tolerate any impositions”, it added.

YAN further pointed out that if government of India was determined to enforce upon Nagas any act under AFSPA, it would carry “a clear message and louder volumes to the world that the Naga people are not an Indian”.

It said keeping Nagas in suspense for centuries, would in no way benefit India at any point of time anywhere.

It is high time that India realizes the seriousness of Naga political problem and concentrate more on people’s dialogues through peaceful means, YAN said.

YAN said declaring Nagaland as DA was totally contradictory and illogical when cease-fire between government of India and Naga Political Groups was still in force.
