The steel girder bridge near CIHSR was built around 80 years after the Nagarjan bridge but it has caused concern for the department since it was considered unsafe and risky for public.
Vikheho instructed the engineers who were present, to take immediate steps to prepare assessment and proposals to begin transitory repair and renovation of the steel girder bridge so as to ensure safety for public till another new bridge was constructed in the vicinity.
The minister was also informed that the steel girder bridge suffered premature deterioration sometime in 1988 due to unabated sand and gravel mining on the river bed below. It was also pointed out that poor workmanship by the construction company could be noticeable after the riverbed caved in by six meters.
While inspecting the other bride at Nagarjan, the minister remarked that it still looked “magnificent” when view from below. He also said the look also signified “superior workmanship and technical expertise” which went towards construction of the century-old bridge.
Vikheho also instructed the department engineers to undertake enhancement of some safety measures by putting up side railings and foundation support. He also asked the engineers to make proper assessment with required machineries while preparing their report.
The minister felt that no individual/entity should attach pipes or cables to any of the bridges as they only compromise on the durability of the bridges, endangering the safety of commuters.
The R&B minister also instructed the department engineers and officials to prepare detailed proposals for procurement of equipment to rebuild and restructure the department in order to boost its efficiency.
He said the it was a prime need for change in order to cope up with state of the art technology.
Talking to Nagaland Post during the inspection, Vikheho informed that the department would be coming up with a maintenance policy to undertake routine and strategic remedial works for improvement of roads and bridges in Nagaland. He said these would be in the interest of public safety and convenience but also reminded public that it was also their responsibility to care for public properties especially roads and bridges.
Vikheho also asked the department officials and engineers to come out with more realistic and practical approaches for improvement so that the department could win the trust and appreciation of public.
After the inspection of the two bridges, Vikheho also undertook a preliminary inspection of the site for the proposed over-bridge between Nagarjan area and Thahekhu gate, which would greatly ease current traffic congestion within Dimapur town. The minister was accompanied by Engineer-in-Chief, Chief Engineer (R&B), executive engineers, junior engineers and staff of (R&B) Dimapur division.

Deptt. to carry out routine and strategic remedial works Newly inducted minister of PWD (R&B) Vikheho Swu inspected the RCC steel girder bridge over Chathe river behind CIHSR and also the century-old bridge built by the British at full Nagarjan towards electrical colony Dimapur Tuesday.
