All sixty Nagaland legislators cutting across party lines under the banner of Joint Legislators Forum (JLF) led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio, met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Tuesday in New Delhi seeking a permanent solution to the protracted Naga political issue.<\/p>\n
In their meeting with the prime minister, the legislators from Nagaland wanted that any solution should be \u201chonourable and acceptable\u201d and that it be inclusive of all groups and that it should be arrived at before March 2013 when the elections are scheduled.<\/p>\n
Pointing out that 15 years of ceasefire and peace talks on the vexed Naga political issue was long enough, the MLAs conveyed to Prime Minister that time was \u201cripe\u201d for arriving at a settlement. <\/p>\n
The legislators also reaffirmed they were prepared to step down once any solution was reached to ensure permanent peace in Nagaland.<\/p>\n
Addressing a press conference at Nagaland House, New Delhi with the legislators Nagaland, chief minister Neiphiu Rio said \u201cNaga people feel that 15 years of ceasefire and political dialogue was long enough a period for Government of India to understand the issue. They now want an acceptable and honourable solution to the issue before next year\u2019s assembly polls.\u201d <\/p>\n
Rio said it was a \u201crare occasion for all the political parties to come together and make pledge to make any kind of sacrifice to have a permanent settlement\u201d.<\/p>\n
The delegation also met Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and made similar appeal. After hearing the legislators, Shinde pleaded for more time to study all the relevant facts since it was only six days after he took over as the union home minister.<\/p>\n
Shinde also suggested that the legislators come in a smaller group so as to hold detailed discussions to work out modalities for an agreement.<\/p>\n
He also assured the delegation of his best possible cooperation to bring out an early solution.
\nIt maybe mentioned that the JLF in its meeting July 19 unanimously resolved that all the 60 legislators would resign en-masse to facilitate any interim political arrangement following a peace deal between the Centre and the Naga groups.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
