Posing alongside her son and daughter in a new campaign for Barneys New York, Carine Roitfeld proves that her offspring could give any model a run for their money. But in a new interview, Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld speculates how difficult it might have been for her if her Julia Restoin Roitfeld, 28, and Vladimir Restoin, 26, had not been so aesthetically blessed.
\nThe discussion between the longtime friends, which was published in Interview magazine.
\n\u2018You\u2019re also lucky because they are very beautiful. It would have been difficult to have an ugly daughter.\u2019<\/p>\n

He added that he never saw himself as a parent because he \u2018doesn\u2019t believe in it. If I were a woman, I would love to have lots of kids,\u2019 he explained. \u2018But for men, I don\u2019t believe in it.\u2019
\nThe pair also discussed the reasons Ms Roitfeld, 56, left her high-profile position at Vogue. Mr Lagerfeld told her: \u2018I think freedom is your biggest luxury. You were literally jailed before.\u2019 He continued: \u2018I think you\u2019re more like a bird that can\u2019t be put in a cage\u2019. <\/p>\n

\u2018I don\u2019t want to compare myself to you, but it\u2019s like at Chanel, I can do what I want, when I want, where I want. And that\u2019s because I am worth more when I\u2019m free. I think it\u2019s the same thing for you.\u2019 But Ms Roitfeld, who styled the new Chanel campaign for Mr Lagerfeld, said that she had no aspirations to work for a major label. In her experience one gets anything but freedom.<\/p>\n

\u2018I can never work full time for a large fashion house,\u2019 she said. \u2018I could never do it… Then it would be over. They want to own you.\u2019 They also commiserated about the pitfalls of being rich and famous.
\nMs Roitfeld said: \u2018You\u2019re in your car, you\u2019re in your jet – you don\u2019t have a grip on reality. We can lose touch with reality quite easily.\u2019
\nThe line, which features classic tailored dresses in shades of black and grey, will go on sale at the end of this month. <\/p>\n
