{"id":146462,"date":"2015-01-17T23:19:24","date_gmt":"2015-01-17T23:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/151.106.38.4\/2015\/01\/17\/israel-awards-actor-michael-douglas-1-million-prize\/"},"modified":"2015-01-17T23:19:24","modified_gmt":"2015-01-17T23:19:24","slug":"israel-awards-actor-michael-douglas-1-million-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/2015\/01\/17\/israel-awards-actor-michael-douglas-1-million-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel awards actor Michael Douglas $1 million prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img src=\/old_site\/>Actor Michael Douglas has been awarded the $1 million Genesis Prize award, popularly dubbed the \u201cJewish Nobel Prize,\u201d for his efforts to promote Jewish culture.<br \/>\nThe Genesis Prize Foundation said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will present the award at a ceremony in Jerusalem this summer to the \u201cactor, producer and peace activist.\u201d<br \/>\nThe prize was inaugurated last year in a partnership between the Israeli prime minister\u2019s office, the Genesis Philanthropy Group and the chairman\u2019s office of the Jewish Agency, a nonprofit group with close ties to the Israeli government.<br \/>\nIt is awarded to an individual with a commitment to Jewish values, the Jewish community and the state of Israel.<br \/>\nGenesis chairman Stan Polovets said in a statement issued Wednesday that Douglas was being honored \u201cboth for his professional achievements and for his passion for his Jewish heritage and the Jewish state.\u201d<br \/>\nDouglas\u2019 father, actor Kirk Douglas, is Jewish, and Michael Douglas has embraced his Jewish ancestry and supports Jewish causes. He traveled to Israel last year with his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, to celebrate the bar mitzvah of their son Dylan. The foundation praised the family\u2019s \u201cinclusive approach for Jews of diverse backgrounds.\u201d<br \/>\nIn the statement, the 70-year-old Oscar-winning actor praised his family for encouraging him to explore the Jewish faith. \u201cI hope these teachings and values will be part of the legacy in the world that I leave for my children and those who follow,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nIt said Douglas would direct his prize money to promote inclusiveness and diversity in Judaism.<br \/>\nFormer New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was the recipient of the first prize last year.
