Two female models, who were criticised for tweeting racist comments in May, have reached an agreement with the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
\n\u201cThe comments were accepted as constituting hate speech by the parties,\u201d News24.com quoted the commission as saying in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn terms of the agreement, the respondents made a public apology to the complainants, the commission, and the public,\u201d it said.
\nOn May 3, Jessica Leandra dos Santos told her 2591 twitter followers: \u201cJust, well took on an arrogant and disrespectful kaffir inside Spar. Should have punched him, should have [sic].\u201d<\/p>\n
Dos Santos, who was men\u2019s magazine FHM model of the year in 2011, later deleted the controversial tweet and posted an apology on her blog jessicaleandra.com.
\nFHM disowned her and stripped her of her title.<\/p>\n
One of her sponsors, QuickTrim, which makes weight-loss products, dropped her, while hundreds of people sent messages on Twitter expressing their dismay.
\nIn response to this on May 7, fellow model Tshidi Thamana tweeted: \u201cDear Mr Peter Mokaba, I wish all whites had been killed when you sang \u2018Kill the Boer\u2019, then we wouldn\u2019t have to experience @JessicaLeandra\u2019s racism.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thamana\u2019s tweet also drew widespread condemnation. It was later removed from the social networking site, although she initially defended herself:
\n\u201cDear all… Why do people think I am a racist when I said it was wrong to be racist SMH [shaking my head]… Really!\u201d she tweeted.
\nThe SAHRC received 73 complaints over the two\u2019s tweets.<\/p>\n
The agreement between the two was reached on 27 September.
\nIn a written statement, Thamana said: \u201cI… hereby tender my summary and unequivocal apology to the public, the commission, and complainants who were adversely hurt and offended by the statements made by myself in the manner described in this report.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI therefore truly and genuinely apologise for making such statements,\u201d she wrote.
\nShe accepted the commission\u2019s recommendations and said she would not conduct herself \u201cin a manner associated with hate and hurtful speech or racism\u201d.
\nThe SAHRC said Dos Santos \u201cprovided a similar written undertaking.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
