Parliamentary Secretary for CAWD and Economics & Statistics, R Tohanba, said the improvement in the statistical system will definitely ensure realistic socio-economic planning and policy formulation for achieving faster, sustainable and progressive growth. He said this while addressing the gathering as the chief guest during the observance of 8th National Statistics Day on the theme \u201cService sector statistics\u201d at DES conference hall, Kohima, on Sunday.\nEmphasising on the significance of Statistics Day, he said it provides a great opportunity for creating public awareness about the important role of statistics and also influences all major decisions. He said Statistics Day is observed in honour of professor Mahalonobis on his birthday, a legendary figure and great statistician who played a significant role in laying the foundation of a modern statistical system for the country.
\nTohanba said Statistics Department is a nodal department in the state to collect data for timely dissemination of adequate, reliable and creditable statistics and to maintain the standards of integrity in official statistics. He said statistics should also help improve the level of confidence to the stakeholders, society and hold responsible to the government for providing accurate and reliable data.
\nHe advised the departmental staff that they must be empowered to utilize modern method of collection data for good policy and decision making including issue based demand driven survey, dedicate and timely conduct census. He ensured his fullest possible cooperation in pursuit for enhancing statistical system in the State.
\nHoD Department of Commerce, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Dr. N Martina Solo speaking on the theme \u201cService sector statistics\u201d said as per the computed data from UN national accounts statistics (2013) the performance in services in India during 2001 was 50.1%, 2010 (56.8), 2011 (58.2) and change in share 2011 over 2001 is 8.1 and the services growth rate in 2001 was 7.5, 2010 (9.4) and 2011 at 7.4.
\nShe said as per the economic survey, the sectoral contribution to the State\u2019s GSDP during 2011-12 was 23.90 (primary), 20.13 (secondary), 55.96 (tertiary). She also highlighted the importance of transportation, banking and insurance, storage, tourism sector, co-relation with others sectors, quality management, sense of belongingness and ownership.
