One [of the Bond girls] couldn’t act and the other had been previously exploited as a sex worker. And Bond walks into the shower and makes love to her. Casino Royale was much better.’

While critics around the world claimed Skyfall was the best Bond ever, Faulks refuted the rave reviews the film, that was released in October, had received. ‘The critics said it was one of the greatest Bond films, which is clearly not true. Albert Finney [who plays a Scottish gamekeeper] can’t do a Scottish accent,’ he said.

In 2006 Faulks was commissioned by the estate of Bond’s creator Ian Fleming to write an 007 novel to mark the 2008 centenary of his birth.

The novel, Devil May Care, became an instant best-seller and was praised by some critics as one of the best of 33 Bond sequels written since Fleming’s death.

In his comments about the recent film, Faulks also charged that that both Skyfall and the 2008 film Quantum of Solace had been wrong to show a deeper and sensitive side to 007 because it did not fit with 007’s character.

He said he had abandoned his own attempts to introduce introspection in Bond when he was writing Devil May Care.

Although he wanted to break up the action sequences, he said the result was unconvincing and made the British agent look ‘not thoughtful but slightly gay’.

He said Bond’s charm lies in the balance between his essentially cold character and the fact that he pits it against dark forces to protect Britain.

However he had praise for Ralph Fiennes’ performance as the successor to M, played by Dame Judi Dench.

Mr Faulks’ fellow panelist in Jaipur, Ian Fleming’s biographer Andrew Lycett, disagreed with Faulks. He said he thought the film had all the ingredients of a Bond novel and he found he enjoyed it.

Skyfall, the latest James Bond blockbuster that grossed more than US$1 billion in ten weeks, has been lambasted by author Sebastian Faulks.
