BJP national president Amit Shah is a man with a mission 2019 and no longer ‘Mission 300’ as the ruling party not only faces a measure of anti-incumbency but also a rumbling of discontentment within the ruling party ranks over the authoritarian style of functioning of the Modi-Shah duo. Shah as party president is ever on campaign mode across India. He is equipped with plenty of intelligence inputs across the states about the voter sentiments vis-à-vis the crucial 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The rise of extreme right wing ideology in India has crossed the worrisome point into a dangerous mark; from love jihad to cow protection which carry ‘death sentence’ on the targeted minorities. This legitimacy comes not from the fringe elements but from those holding reins of power. No action can be taken and obviously because the ideology of Hindutva cannot be tamed nor its communal spot be changed. This was reminded during a recent rally in Rajasthan in which BJP president Amit Shah spoke in no uncertain terms about the kind of political language that the ruling party is prepared to speak. In his speech, Amit Shah described Bangladeshi immigrants as ‘termites’ who would soon be struck off the electoral rolls. He said this at an election rally in Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur. Shah also, credited the BJP government with publishing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam and identifying nearly 40 lakh illegal immigrants. However, he did not mention that those not in NRC have a recourse to appeal, and get their named added to it. Shah has caused immense damage to relations between India and Bangladesh at a time when China has been expanding its might across the Indian subcontinent. Unfortunately, the Prime Minister Modi and his government have chosen to ignore Shah’s highly denigrating comment for whatever reasons. If silence means assent then perhaps Modi and his government have spoken out loudly. The highly inflammable speech was shaped to bring communally divisive majoritarian politics because Shah has also realized is that his party the BJP is no longer confident of regaining power in 2019 as the report card of the Modi government is far from reassuring. Modi’s policies have not yielded even less than half the desired result other than appearing impressive on paper and high sounding on TV. The promised economic benefits are not being felt across the nation except by a few chosen capitalists. People are no longer convinced by the media campaigns launched by the BJP’s media brigade while prices of petrol and diesel are reaching skywards, the Rupee dropping to its lowest levels but the finance minister still painting a rosy picture. The most worrisome aspect of the BJP government under Modi and his most able lieutenant Amit Shah, has been the serious damage done to the national psyche of a democratic and pluralistic entity. Today minorities are feeling insecure and in fear of the uncertainties as so-called ‘fringe elements’ continue to roam large and free. Though Modi has had to issue some statements against the extreme right wing goons and cow vigilantes who lynch human beings in the name of cow protection; the ministers and law makers continue to spew venom against all and sundry on the other side of the ideological spectrum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
